What a year at the movies 2024 has already been.Inside Out 2has broken box-office records,Dune: Part Twowas a fittingly grand sequel fromDenis Villeneuve, andChallengersgave us some of the most erotically charged churro eating you’ve ever seen in a film. ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Review: Jenna Ortega Leads Tim Burton’s Fun Throwback
Tim Burton’s latest is a return to form.
Thirty-six years afterMichael Keaton’s “ghost with the most” first hit movie screens, the afterlife’s most notorious rabble-rouser is back inBeetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited and long-planned follow-up to the 1998 hit. Yes, this is a legacy sequel at least partially designed to remind you how much you loved the original, but the good news is that a large chunk of the creative team from the first movie is back, including directorTim Burtonand starsKeaton,Winona Ryder, andCatherine O’Hara. They’ll be joined by newcomersJenna Ortega,Justin Theroux,Monica Bellucci, andWillem Dafoein a generational tale that finds Ortega playing the daughter of Lydia Deetz, Ryder’s OG goth-queen teen. The fact that it took more than three decades to find a sequel story that Burton and Keaton agreed to make hints that no one is here just to cash in on nostalgia and that perhaps a full return to form from Burton is incoming. The livingandthe dead can keep their fingers crossed for that outcome. As Betelgeuse himself says, “It’s showtime!”– Robert Brian Taylor
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: The sequel to the cult classic brings back the infamous ghost Beetlejuice, who is unleashed upon a modern family, setting off a chain of hilarious and supernatural events. As mischief ensues, both the living and the deceased must deal with the resulting chaos, blending comedic antics with ghostly intrigue.
‘His Three Daughters’
‘His Three Daughters’ Review: Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, and Carrie Coon Are Tremendous in Staggering Dramedy
Writer-director Azazel Jacobs' film about loss and family is his best so far, and one of the most powerful films of the year.
Three sisters (played byNatasha Lyonne,Elizabeth Olsen, andCarrie Coon) waiting around for their father (Jay O. Sanders) to die in his apartment might not seem like much, but in the hands of writer-directorAzazel Jacobs,His Three Daughtersbecomes a powerful, beautiful, and often very funny look at loss, acceptance, and the importance of those who have always been there for us. Watching these three interact with each other in such confined spaces is both a joy and understandably frustrating. Coon and Olsen are both expectedly great, but it’s Lyonne who is the true heart of the film, as the closest daughter to their dad, she’s struggling with the realization he’s going to pass soon and the lack of understanding from her sisters about her situation. For anyone who has ever gone through immense loss, Jacobs’ film is essential viewing, centered around three tremendous performances. His Three Daughterswas one of the best films at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and it’s easily one of the best films of 2024 as well.–Ross Bonaime

His Three Daughters
This tense, touching, and funny portrait of family dynamics follows three estranged sisters as they converge in a New York apartment to care for their ailing father and try to mend their own broken relationship with one another.
‘The Front Room’
Over the last decade, “Eggers” has become an important name in horror, withRobert Eggers’ writing and directing ofThe WitchandThe Lighthouse, as well asThe Northman. This fall, it seems as though that name is going to become even more powerful, as the brothers of Robert Eggers,MaxandSam Eggers, make their feature film debut withThe Front Room.Brandystars as Belinda, a newly pregnant woman whose life goes to hell when her mother-in-law Solange (Kathryn Hunter) moves in. The trailers makeThe Front Roomlook like a tense one-on-one battle between Brandy and Hunter, who looks delightfully creepy as hell. In a year that’s already been quite strong with horror releases,The Front Roomlooks to introduce us to two new terrifying Eggers.–Ross Bonaime
The Front Room
A psychological horror that follows Belinda, a newly pregnant woman, whose life turns into a nightmare when her estranged mother-in-law moves in. As the sinister presence takes hold, Belinda must protect her unborn child from her diabolical guest.
‘Rebel Ridge’
Believe it or not, it’s almost been a full decade sinceGreen Room, the last film both written and directed byJeremy Saulnier. Even just as a director, it’s been six years since Saulnier’s last film,Hold the Dark. But his latest film,Rebel Ridge, looks like a return to form, a classic tale of good versus evil full of revenge and probably lots of violence.Aaron Pierrestars as Terry Richmond, who comes to the town of Shelby Springs to bail out his cousin. But when the corrupt police, led byDon Johnson’s Chief Sandy Burnne, unlawfully steal his money, Terry does what he needs to do to get back what’s his. If Saulnier’s past work is anything to go by,Rebel Ridgeis likely full of the sort of action sequences that will leave you squirming in your seat, as films likeBlue RuinandGreen Roomare full of some of the most disturbing moments of violence to hit the screens in action films. It’s been too long, Saulnier, it’s great to see you back.–Ross Bonaime
Rebel Ridge
In Rebel Ridge, a man with a mysterious past embarks on a mission to seek justice against those who wronged him. Set in a small town, the film explores themes of vengeance and redemption, as the protagonist navigates a dangerous path that tests his resolve and challenges the status quo.
‘Speak No Evil’
September 13
You might hear “an English-language remake of a horror movie” and immediately turn up your nose — and part of me doesn’t blame you. Are English speakers so lazy and dumb that they can’t read a few sentences per shot and enjoy a movie at the same time? Maybe, if you ask Bong Joon-ho. Still, don’t dismissJames Watkins’Speak No Evil. The director who gave us the grizzly kitchen sink horrorEden Lakeand the surprisingly terrifyingThe Woman in Blackis turning his skills to this story of humans’ desperation to be liked and politely taken to sinister and destructive levels. A remake of the 2022 Danish film directed byChristian Tafdrup,Speak No Evilfollows two married couples played byJames McAvoy,Aisling Franciosi, Mackenzie Davis, andScoot McNairywho meet on vacation with their children. What starts off as a convivial coming together of strangers who might just make great friends descends into nightmarish psychological warfare. With McAvoy becoming a new dependable name in horror since his turn inSplitand Watkins previously delivering some pretty effective scares in the past,Blumhouse’sSpeak No Evilmay be more than just another horror remake.–Emma Kiely
Speak No Evil
Speak No Evil follows an American family who accepts an invitation to spend the weekend at a British family’s country estate. What starts as a delightful holiday quickly turns into a psychological nightmare as tensions and sinister intentions come to light.
‘The Killer’s Game’
Between theGuardians of the Galaxytrilogy, bothDunefilms,Glass Onion,Blade Runner 2049,and a chilling performance inKnock at the Cabin, there’s a good case to be made thatDave Bautistais one of the most exciting actors to ever come out of wrestling. While Bautista has certainly been the lead of films before,The Killer’s Gameseems like a great opportunity for him to prove he’s a great leading man on his own. Bautista plays Joe Flood, a hitman who discovers he has a terminal illness and decides to end his life by putting a hit out on himself. Yet these assassins also decide to target his pregnant ex-girlfriend, which leads him to fight back. The Killer’s Gamealso featuresSofia Boutella,Terry Crews,Ben Kingsley, and hisGuardiansco-starPom Klementieff, and is directed byJ.J. Perryof the delightfully over-the-topDay Shift.Bautista is inherently fun to watch, and having him kill his way through countless droves of attackers could be a pleasant September surprise.–Ross Bonaime

The Killer’s Game follows a highly skilled assassin who receives news of a terminal illness and accepts a final job to eliminate himself. However, he soon learns the diagnosis was a mistake, sparking a dangerous struggle for survival as he becomes the target of other assassins trying to complete the contract.
‘My Old Ass’
‘My Old Ass’ Review: Aubrey Plaza’s Coming-of-Age Comedy Is 2024’s Most Delightful Surprise
Megan Park’s follow-up to ‘The Fallout’ perfectly captures that period before leaving home, featuring an excellent performance by Aubrey Plaza.
Aubrey Plazais taking over our screens this fall in projects such asAgatha All Along,Megalopolis, andMy Old Ass, and this writer has zero complaints. TheParks and Recreationstar has always been able to oscillate between comedy and drama, as well as obscure indies and more mainstream fare, with total ease. The upcoming filmMy Old Assseems like the perfect vehicle for Plaza to be her funny self, while also reminding audiences that she’s a hell of an impressive dramatic actor, too.

Written and directed byThe Fallout’sMegan Parkand produced byMargot Robbie, the Sundance Film Festival Official Selection follows Elliott (Maisy Stella), a young adult who, after taking drugs in the woods with her friends (as one does), meets her 39-year-old self (Plaza). Elliott’s older alter ego advises her to steer clear of this guy named Chad (Percy Hynes White), though it might seem too late. But more than that, the adult version of Elliott uses this chance to explain to her younger self the importance of loving the moment she’s in and the people she’s with, because it’s the best and most precious time of her life. Stella and Plaza’s chemistry couldn’t be better in what is sure to beone of the most heartfelt, hilarious, and unique coming-of-age dramedies you’ll see this year.–Emily Bernard
My Old Ass
Elliott Labrant, who has been advised by her future self not to fall in love, is sure she can do so after being given the advice. That is, until she meets the boy her older self warned her about.
‘The 4:30 Movie’
Kevin Smithis a man who loves his nostalgia, whether it’s returning to Jay and Silent Bob, theClerksfranchise, or simply writing dialogue about the entertainment of his youth. So it’s actually sort of surprising that Smith hasn’t made an ‘80s teen comedy before now, but he’ll break the trend withThe 4:30 Movie. The film, loosely based on Smith’s youth, follows three teenagers who sneak into movies on Saturdays, and what happens when one of the boys invites a girl to come along. Smith balances his young cast out with appearances from some of his stalwarts, likeJason Lee,Justin Long,Rosario Dawson,Jason Mewes, and more. Smith has always loved to throw in references to the movies of his past, soThe 4:30 Movieis a perfect opportunity for him to indulge in this wholeheartedlyand gives him a chance to show off the big heart that also permeates some of his best films.–Ross Bonaime
The 4:30 Movie
Set in 1986, this coming-of-age comedy follows three teenage friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movie theaters. When one of them invites his crush along, the group’s dynamics are thrown into chaos, leading to a summer of humorous and poignant adventures.
‘Transformers One’
September 20
After a decade ofMichael Bay’sTransformers films, the series is seemingly starting to find its groove. 2018’sBumblebeeshowed that a live-action Transformers movie could actually be entertaining in the right hands, andTransformers: Rise of the Beastsopened up the possibilities of an actual Hasbro Cinematic Universe. But for the first time since 1986’sTransformers: The Movie, this franchise is getting another theatrical animated film withTransformers: One. Directed byToy Story 4’sJosh Cooley, the film is an origin story, telling the story of two Cybertronian workers, Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry), who go from friends to enemies, and who become the Transformers we know as Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively. With a cast that also includesScarlett Johansson,Keegan-Michael Key,Steve Buscemi,Laurence Fishburne, andJon Hamm,Transformers Onetakes this series back to animation in what looks like it could be one of their best adventures yet.–Ross Bonaime
Transformers One
Transformers One explores the origins of the iconic Autobots and Decepticons on their home planet of Cybertron. Set against a complex backdrop of alliances and betrayals, the film delves into the formative events and key figures that shaped these legendary factions, leading to their epic conflict.
Come on, does it get any more charming thanBrad PittandGeorge Clooney? Not really. The two Hollywood heavyweights (and real-life best pals) are slinging their wisecracks, charisma, and overall coolness at each other inWolfs, the latest from writer-directorJon Watts. The premise is fairly straightforward: George Clooney’s Jack is a “fixer,” someone who comes in and cleans up messes, doing the — at times, quite literal — dirty work. Pitt’s Nick does the exact same thing, which Jack finds out in an ill-timed manner: on the job. One lone wolf is forced to work with another when Nick and Jack both bump into each other fixing a mess involving a body and a bunch of drugs. The two don’t seem very eager to collaborate, even though they almost seem like the same person. The action comedy genre is a perfect fit for the uber-famous pair to be both suave movie stars and self-aware jokesters.–Emily Bernard

Wolves follows a young man whose life is upended when he discovers a deep family secret regarding his lineage. As he begins to understand his true identity and the dangers it attracts, he struggles with newfound powers and attempts to confront the threats posed by both humans and supernatural forces.
‘A Different Man’
‘A Different Man’ Review: Sebastian Stan Hides Behind a Mask in Audacious A24 Thriller
Aaron Schimberg’s film is a bold dark comedy with excellent performances by Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson.
Outside of the MCU,Sebastian Stan has made some fascinating choicesas an actor recently, from playing a cannibal inFresh,Tommy LeeinPam & Tommy, and even playing Donald Trump in the upcomingThe Apprentice. But his performance inA Different Manmight be his finest so far. Stan plays Edward, an actor with a facial disfigurement due to neurofibromatosis, who decides to undergo a surgery that will make him look like…well, Sebastian Stan. This operation gives Edward a new life of success unlike he’s ever known before. But when his former neighbor Ingrid (Renate Reinsve) writes a play about Edward’s former life, he becomes obsessed with playing the part again. Written and directed byAaron Schimberg,A Different Manis a complex and strange black comedy, and with a standout performance byAdam Pearsonwho plays Oswald, a man who also has neurofibromatosis and tries out for the part Edward wants.A Different Manis a wild film that gives us one of Stan’s best performances so far.–Ross Bonaime

A Different Man
A man undergoes reconstructive surgery to escape his troubled past and takes on a new identity. As he becomes involved in a stage production inspired by his own life, he confronts his former self and grapples with the blurred lines between reality and performance.
‘Never Let Go’
DirectorAlexandre Ajahas a pretty strong history of horror projects, withHigh Tension, 2006’sThe Hills Have Eyes, and films that mix horror and comedy likePiranha 3D,Horns, andCrawl. With his latest film,Never Let Go, Aja seems to be diving into more psychological horror, and with the help ofHalle Berryas his lead. In the film, Berry plays a mother who is trying to protect her twin sons from an evil that surrounds their isolated house, and according to the matriarch, the rest of the world. The first trailers makeNever Let Golook like it could be an almostA Quiet Place-esque horror of unseen monsters that could attack at any time, ora deeper issue that could be entirely in Berry’s character’s mind. –Ross Bonaime
Never Let Go
A family that has been haunted by an evil spirit for years. Their safety and their surroundings come into question when one of the children questions if the evil is real.
‘The Substance’
‘The Substance’ Review: Demi Moore Is Back in Stylish Body Horror | Cannes 2024
Also starring Margaret Qualley, this film is a raucous ride.
It’s pretty wild that a sci-fi horror film likeThe Substancewon Best Screenplay at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, butCoralie Fargeat’s film certainly seems like the wild, twisty film that we need this fall.Demi Moorestars as Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging celebrity is fired on her 50th birthday, and begins taking a drug that will temporarily create a younger version of herself, played byMargaret Qualley. Not only is it great to have Moore back in a project as wild as this, it also sounds like one of the more bonkers films coming out this fall, receiving comparisons to everything fromStanley KubricktoDavid Cronenberg. Hell yeah, let’s get weird this fall.– Ross Bonaime
The Substance

‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’
September 21
‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ Review: Moving Doc Shows What It Means to be a Hero
Peter Ettedgui and Ian Bonhôte’s documentary shows the incredible life of the man who became Superman, then became a truly super man in his real life.
InSuper/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, directorsIan BonhôteandPeter Ettedguiare far more interested in showingChristopher Reeveas a man than as a superhero, and this powerful documentary is all the better for it.Super/Manmostly downplays the period of Reeve’s life where he played Superman, instead opting to show him as an actor who wanted to do something great, then struggled to be taken seriously after the success of theSupermanfilms. Then, after his heartbreaking accident,Super/Manshows a man determined not to give up, fighting not only for his ability to walk again, but to help fight for disability rights.Super/Mantells Reeve’s story largely through the stories of his children and what it was like living with him, and the film never shies away from Reeve’s weaknesses.Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Storyis a well-rounded documentary that shows Reeve truly was a superhero on and off the screen.– Ross Bonaime

‘The Wild Robot’
September 27
Writer-directorChris Sandershas made classics for both Disney and DreamWorks, co-directing 2002’sLilo & Stitchafter years with Disney, then shifting to co-directingHow to Train Your Dragonfor DreamWorks in 2010, andThe Croodsin 2013. After making his solo directorial debut with 2020’sThe Call of the Wild, Sanders is back to animation withThe Wild Robot, the story of a robot named Roz (Lupita Nyong’o), who gets abandoned and ends up on an uninhabited island. Roz runs into a whole slew of animals that just happen to be voiced by an absurdly great cast that includesPedro Pascal,Kit Connor,Catherine O’Hara,Bill Nighy,Mark Hamill,Matt Berry, andVing Rhames. Sanders has proven to be a force to be reckoned with in animation, andThe Wild Robotcould be his next big hitin that space.– Ross Bonaime

‘Megalopolis’
‘Megalopolis’ Review: Francis Ford Coppola’s Sci-Fi Is a Big, Bonkers Swing
It’s finally here, but the result is not what you’d hope for.
There is no way to fully explain the wild swing that isFrancis Ford Coppola’sMegalopolisother than to say there is unlikely to be a film of this scale more divisive than you’ll see for the remainder of the year. A passion project that the director sold his wine empire to be able to make, it starsAdam Driveras a misunderstood yet talented architect named Francis… I mean Caesar Catalina who is trying to build a utopia in what is called New Rome. However, the large swath of other characters around him (withAubrey Plazabeing the best of the bunch) either don’t appreciate his genius or are actively hostile to it. However, he carries on as the world continues to teeter on the edge of falling, with Coppola himself throwing the kitchen sink at the screen with observations about sex, power, politics, art, creation, and more all pouring out. What it all amounts to will depend on those who see it, but it’s the one film that is sure to get people talking about what the hell Coppola was cooking.–Chase Hutchinson

An architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster.
‘Apartment 7A’
You know what this world needs? Another horror prequel.Following the surprise critical success ofThe First Omen, we’re getting another throwback to classic horror withApartment 7A. While it’s not marketing itself as a prequel, as its connection to a horror classic was meant to be a secret, it was revealed while the film was in production that itis a prequel to the iconic horror film,Rosemary’s Baby.Apartment 7A, which will premiere exclusively on Paramount+, is set to followJulia Garner’s Terry, a newbie to New York in the 1960s who is pursuing her dream of becoming a Broadway dancer. However, after an injury shatters those chances, a seemingly generous couple, Minnie and Roman Castevet (the same devil-worshipping neighbors fromRosemary’s Baby) played byDiane WiestandKevin McNally, offer her their vacant apartment. Once she moves in, strange things start happening to Terry, and she learns that her neighbor’s good deed has come at a price.–Emma Kiely

‘Lee’ Review: Kate Winslet Is Excellent in Otherwise Bland Biopic
Even Andy Samberg can’t sufficiently elevate this uninspired World War II biopic.
It’s been about four years since we’ve actually seenKate Winsletas the lead of a film, although she’s done great work since then, like starring inMare of Easttown, and giving a standout performance in her reunion withJames CameronforAvatar: The Way of Water. But Winslet returns to the forefront of her own movie withLee, based on the true story of Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller, a fashion model who ended up becoming a war photographer documenting the events of World War II for Vogue Magazine.Leetook almost a decade to make, and had to deal with funding shortages and Winslet undergoing an incident that sent her to the hospital.Leealso has a phenomenal supporting cast that includesMarion Cotillard,Andrea Riseborough,Noémie Merlant,Josh O’Connor,Alexander Skarsgård, and, yes,Andy Samberg. –Ross Bonaime
The life of legendary war photographer Lee Miller is brought to the screen, chronicling her daring exploits across battlefields and war-torn regions. As she captures the harsh realities of conflict, Lee’s lens reveals the human side of war and its lasting effects.
‘Azrael’ Review: Samara Weaving Rules in Blood-Soaked, Mostly Silent Horror
E.L. Katz’s ‘Azrael’ takes a bare-bones approach to horror, led by a performance that cements Samara Weaving as a horror icon.
There’s nothing that says kick-ass quite likeSamara Weavingbattling it out against a horde of baddies who want her dead.It happened in Ready or Not, and it’s happening again inAzrael, the upcoming apocalyptic survival thriller from directorE.L. Katz. The catch though? No one speaks a single word. In a burnt-out world where faith means less about religion and more about deadly sacrifices to an unknown evil, words have been done away with, and Weaving’s Azrael must fight to escape those who want to make her one of those sacrifices. Having seen the kick-ass thriller when it debuted earlier this year at Overlook Film Festival, I can say for certain that it’s an anxiety-inducing, dread-filled ride, where Weaving gets to once again show off her skills as a scream queen — but is there a word for that if said queen can’t scream?– Maggie Boccella
In a world no one speaks a devout female hunts down a young woman who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is due to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil deep within the surrounding wilderness
‘Will & Harper’
‘Will & Harper’ Review: Will Ferrell Shows Comedians How It’s Done | Sundance 2024
Will Ferrell and his transgender friend Harper Steele go on a hilarious and heartfelt road trip across America in this crucial documentary.
I already had a serious love forWill Ferrellafter discovering he’s been quietly producing female-driven films likeMay December,Hustlers, andBooksmartfor years, but I gained even more respect for him after watching him use his platform to help his trans friend tell her story inWill & Harper— one of the sweetest, most intimate documentaries you’ll see this year. The movie sees Ferrell and his longtime pal Harper Steele — who used to write onSaturday Night Liveand, in fact, advocated for Ferrell on the show when others were uncertain about his potential — go on a road trip across the country. The two comedians share many a laugh, cheap beer, and can of Pringles, but they also share candid discussions about Steele’s transition. The film offers a raw and honest look at the struggles Steele has gone through over the years and acts as an exceptional tool for well-meaning allies like Ferrell, who want to be there for their friends but don’t always know how to do so.Will & Harperbroaches what can feel like a daunting subject with levity and care, humanizing each of its subjects and reiterating the joy and power of friendship. –Taylor Gates
Will & Harper
In this intimate portrayal of friendship, transition, and America, Will Ferrell and his best buddy of thirty years decide to go on a cross-country road trip to explore this new chapter in their relationship.
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’
When it was first announced that there would be a sequel toTodd Philips’Joker, it was a bit of a shock. As someone who considers the 2019 film to be a brilliant character study of a troubled, tortured person — portrayed perfectly by Oscar-winnerJoaquin Phoenix— the news that there would be a sequel to this contained narrative certainly elicited a head scratch (and perhaps even an eye roll). To make things even more complicated, the sequel was also set to be a musical.
But if the trailers forJoker: Folie à Deuxare any indication of the much-anticipated movie’s quality, the high standards of the first film seem to remain intact. The psychological thriller picks up two years after the events ofJoker, with Arthur now spending his days at Arkham State Hospital. He meets and falls for none other than Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), a music therapist. Aided by a growing crowd of supporters,Joker and Harley team up to make Gotham their own, all while indulging themselves in their most extravagant musical fantasies. And we can’t help but wonder… is Harley all in Arthur’s head? –Emily Bernard

Set against a backdrop of societal unrest, Arthur’s journey intertwines personal transformation with chaotic encounters, leading to profound shifts in his life and the world around him.
‘White Bird’
Oh boy, the journey forWhite Birdhas been a wild one.Originally scheduled for release back in September of 2022, it looks as thoughMarc Forster’s latest film will finally get released 25 months later than originally expected. And to be fair, it’s sort of understandablewhythis has been such a difficult release, as how do you market a film that is both a sequel toWonder, and a prequel set during Nazi-occupied France during World War II? That’s a hard sell, despite the popularity ofR. J. Palacio’s book. This prequel/sequel also starsHelen MirrenandGillian Anderson, and it’s going to be interesting to see how Forster pulls off such a wild left turn fromWonderwith this film.– Ross Bonaime
White Bird
White Bird follows the journey of Julian, a boy expelled from school for bullying, as he struggles to fit in at a new institution. His transformation begins when his grandmother shares her compelling story of courage during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, where a classmate offered her shelter.
‘The Outrun’
Already in her career,Saoirse Ronanhas given some iconic performances, earned four Oscar nominations, and proven to be one of the most exciting actresses of her generation. But one of her most challenging roles yet comes inThe Outrun, based on the memoir of the same name byAmy Liptrot. Ronan plays Rona, who returns to her home on the Orkney Islands after a stint in rehab and loving her long-term boyfriend. Rona reconnects with the Scottish coast while also struggling to stay sober. It’s a powerful, difficult performance from Ronan, who wildly shifts from delightful to unbearable after a few drinks, an addiction drama that never feels like it’s just about addiction, as we truly hope Rona will stay sober. We’ve never seen Ronan in a role like this, and that could very well lead to her fifth Oscar nomination.– Ross Bonaime
‘The Outrun’ Review: Saoirse Ronan Is Excellent in Harrowing Addiction Story
Writer-director Nora Fingscheidt’s adaptation is a remarkable take on the addiction film, and gives Ronan one of her best performances yet.
The Outrun

‘Piece by Piece’
In what might be one of the strangest films to come out this fall,Pharrell Williamsis getting a documentary about his life and career fromWon’t You Be My Neighbor?and20 Feet from StardomdirectorMorgan Neville. The weird part? It’s a documentary comprised of Legos. Keep in mind, Williamsalsohas another film in the works based on his childhood, directed byMichel Gondrycoming as well. ButPiece by Piecefeatures the voices and Lego mini figurines of Pharrell, as well asGwen Stefani,Kendrick Lamar,Timbaland,Justin Timberlake,Busta Rhymes,Jay-Z,Snoop Dogg, and even Daft Punk. Say what you will aboutPiece by Piece, but at least this seems to be a unique take on a genre that can be fairly formulaic. –Ross Bonaime

‘Terrifier 3’
Strap in fellow sickos asTerrifier 3is already shaping up to be the bloodiest horror movie of the year that’s here just in time for the holidays. Just to bring you up to speed if you weren’t already aware, this scrappy series is built around the travails ofArt the Clown, who is a silent yet nearly invincible killer who will destroy his victims in some of the most brutal ways imaginable. This all began with a debut film that was downright quaint in comparison to the second that expanded the runtime and scope just as it did the horrifying kills. Now, it’s Christmas in this truly crazed and unrelentingly brutal world with Art on the prowl once more. That means he can create bloody snow angels and tear his way through flesh once more. What could be more cheery than that? Seriously though, these movies are not for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach, so you best go in with that in mind, as it’s looking like the only gifts this film is going to offer us are the kind that may scar your mind with how visceral they are.–Chase Hutchinson
Terrifier 3

‘We Live in Time’
A romance movie led by two of today’s biggest stars would’ve been a recipe for box-office success…10 years ago. But now, if you don’t have a beloved IP or a man in a cape, usually these stories get relegated to a streaming-only release. That’s what makes the prospect ofJohn Crowley’s (Brooklyn, The Goldfinch) as exciting as it is refreshing. StarringAndrew GarfieldandFlorence Pugh,We Live in Timeis set to chronicle the relationship of Tobias and Alma, who first meet when she accidentally hits him with her car. The trailer shows the London-based couple falling in love, having a daughter, and facing Alma’s cancer diagnosis. The theme of time and its intersection with human relationships is set to be the core theme of the film, as Garfield’s Tobias panically tells Alma that he needs to stop looking forward when she’s right in front of him. With Garfield and Pugh being two of Hollywood’s most versatile performers, it’s fair to predict thatWe Live in Timewill be worth checking out, as well as Crowley’s aptitude for character-focused love stories as seen in his Oscar-nominated adaptation ofBrooklyn. –Emma Kiely

Not only was it financially successful, but it was an unflinching and downright terrifying look at how mental illness is a dangerous force that cannot be fought without help and understanding. ‘Anora’ Review: Sean Baker’s Spectacular, Palme d’Or-Winner Thriller
The top winner at the festival is an absolutely magnificent and devastating look at modern class exploitation.
The rich have class solidarity, do you? Placing itself in a world where the wealthy get wealthier and the poor get poorer just as they increasingly scrap to get by (also known as our own hellscape),Sean Baker’sAnorais his best film yet as well as one of the best of the year. Winner of this year’s Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival with an outstanding breakout performance fromMikey Madison, it follows her titular character as she marries into wealth only to find that her ticket to a better life may soon be ripped away. Both as thrilling and darkly comedic as it is incisive about the way all the similarly vulnerable characters around her don’t see how they have more in common than they realize, it’s just a damn good movie that surprises in more ways than one. Go see it with your coworkers and maybe, just maybe, they’ll come away realizing all the ways we need to support each other in a world that seems to pit us against each other. –Chase Hutchinson
Anora follows a young sex worker from Brooklyn who impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch, igniting a potential fairy tale. Upon learning of the union, his influential parents travel to New York to annul the marriage, jeopardizing her unexpected chance at a new beginning.
‘Woman of the Hour’
‘Woman of the Hour’ Review: Anna Kendrick’s Directorial Debut Is a Haunting, Surprising Serial Killer Story
With strong direction from Kendrick and a terrifying performance by Daniel Zovatto, ‘Woman of the Hour’ is a fascinating directorial debut.
Anna Kendrickmakes her unsettling directorial debut withWoman of the Hour, based on the true story ofRodney Alcaca, a serial killer who appeared onThe Dating Gamein 1978 during his killing spree. Kendrick also stars as Cheryl Bradshaw, an actress who takes a spot as a contestant onThe Dating Game, whileIt FollowsandThe Pope’s Exorcist’sDaniel Zovattoplays Alcaca. For Kendrick,Woman of the Houris a surprisingly dark story to explore for her debut, but she handles the subject matter well, always making us unnerved by Alcaca, but always understanding how his charm could’ve let him to get so close to so many victims. AfterWoman of the Hour, here’s hoping we see more of Kendrick behind the camera. –Ross Bonaime

‘Venom: The Last Dance’
October 25
Despite the fact thatMadame Web, likeMorbiusbefore it, flamed out of the box office, Sony’s Spider-Verse somehow keeps sputtering along, with two new releases set for the back half of this year.Kraven the Hunterseems like a dicey proposition, but thankfully the franchise’s one character whohasmanaged to connect with audiences is returning, as well. That’s right Venom-heads,Tom Hardy’s murderous, gooey anti-hero is back in black withVenom: The Last Dance, the third and, based on the title, maybe final installment in the series. And while Hardy’s symbiote-infused Eddie Brock did turn up in a credits stinger at the end ofSpider-Man: No Way Home,The Last Danceseems to be another stand-alone Venom movie that picks up following the original two films. New to the series areChiwetel Ejioforas a soldier trying to track down Venom andJuno Templeas an accompanying scientist. Meanwhile,Peggy Luis back as everyone’s favorite convenience-store owner, Mrs. Chen, andStephen Grahamreturns as Det. Patrick Mulligan, who’s destined to become the symbiote known as Toxin. If Kraven bombs, who knows what happens to the Spider-Verse after this year? (I’m sure Disney and Marvel Studios are willing to listen to offers.) But you can’t dispute that Hardy’s full commitment to the character and the bit have made theVenomfilms worth paying attention to. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with craving a little head-chomping action to add to your fall movie diet.– Robert Brian Taylor

‘Nickel Boys’
Nickel Boyshas all the makings of a film that could truly dominate at the Oscars. DirectorRaMell Ross’ last film was the astoundingly beautifulHale County This Morning, This Evening, which was nominated for Best Documentary. “Nickel Boys” was also a tremendous success for the book’s writerColson Whitehead, as his follow-up to “The Underground Railroad” earned the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2020.Nickel Boysfollows two boys, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), who bond during their times at the horrific Nickel Academy. Years later, the monstrous activities that went on at the school are brought back up through an investigation, which drags all these memories back to light.Nickel Boysis a difficult yet powerful novel from Whitehead, and this adaptation also features a cast that includesAunjanue Ellis-Taylor,Hamish Linklater,Fred Hechinger, andDaveed Diggsas the older Elwood.Odds are we’re going to hear quite a bit aboutNickel Boyscome award season.– Ross Bonaime
‘Conclave’
November 1
DirectorEdward Bergermade a name for himself with 2022’sAll Quiet on the Western Front, which ended up winning 4 Oscars. Berger’s follow-up,Conclave, looks to be just as stressful as his last film. Based onRobert Harris’ book of the same name,Conclavecenters around Cardinal Lawrence, who is leading the selection of a new Pope. With some of the most powerful people in the Catholic Church alongside him in the Vatican, Lawrence unveils a vast conspiracy.Conclavealso starsStanley Tucci,John Lithgow, andIsabella Rossellini, and is adapted byPeter Straughan, who is no stranger to adaptations, having written the screenplays forTinker Tailor Soldier Spy, andThe Goldfinch. LikeAll Quiet on the Western Front, Berger’s latest also seems like a film mentioned quite a bit at the Oscars. –Ross Bonaime
Following the unexpected death of the pope, Cardinal Lawrence (played by Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with overseeing the secretive conclave to elect the next pope. As the process unfolds, he uncovers a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church.
Robert Zemeckis’ experiments with technology are a mixed bag to say the least. For everyWho Framed Roger RabbitandBack to the Future, there’s aPolar Express,Welcome to Marwen, andPinocchioto balance things out. But Zemeckis’ latest film,Here, sounds like it could be one of his most fascinating experiments yet.Herereunites Zemeckis with hisForrest Gumpstars,Tom HanksandRobin Wright, in this adaptation ofRichard McGuire’s remarkable graphic novel. But what makesHerestand out is that it’s a film shot from one unmoving angle, as we follow several generations of a family in their New England home. If it’s anything like McGuire’s source material, the story also jumps forward and backward in time far before and after this house was ever built, showing us everything from dinosaurs to terrifying futures.Herevery well could be the most ambitious project Zemeckis has ever made, but one that also requires quite a bit of restraint, so it’ll be interesting to see if this falls in the vast spectrum of his work.– Ross Bonaime
Based on the graphic novel by Richard McGuire, Here is an ambitious and innovative film that explores the lives of multiple families over generations, centered around a single location in New England. The film highlights themes of love, loss, and legacy as it spans centuries, capturing the essence of the human experience.
Steve McQueenis an epic filmmaker, and not in terms of monsters, superheroes, or galaxies far far away. His career started with intimate, uncomfortable dramas (usually starringMichael Fassbender) chronicling stories of political hunger strikes and sex addiction. McQueen then crafted the historical epic12 Years a Slaveand won the Oscar for Best Picture. His follow-up,Widows, was a lower-scale but still masterfully made look at political corruption and women’s fight to break the cycle of power and abuse. Now, McQueen takes us back to London during WWII. StarringSaoirse Ronan,Harris Dickinson,Elliot Heffernan,Steven Graham, andLeigh Gill,Blitzwill follow the story of a son (Heffernan) and mother (Ronan) trying to reunite against the chaos and destruction of a war-torn city. With a cast and filmmaker of this caliber,Blitzis sure to be a frontrunner during next year’s award circuit.– Emma Kiely

‘A Real Pain’
‘A Real Pain’ Review: Kieran Culkin Is a Real Star in Jesse Eisenberg’s Stellar Dramedy
The film revolves around two cousins on a Holocaust tour after the death of their grandmother.
My favorite film of Sundance might very well end up being my favorite film of the year as well.A Real PaincementsJesse Eisenbergas a triple-threat, as he writes, directs, and stars in a pitch-perfect dramedy about two very different cousins, David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), as they find themselves on a group tour around Poland after their grandmother’s death. Trying to infuse a movie about a Holocaust tour with humor is inherently risky, but somehow, Eisenberg manages it, bringing the laughs without ever sacrificing poignant emotion or exploring complex questions about grief and our expressions of it. Culkin has never been better, giving Benji irresistible charisma and compelling contradictions — it’s impossible not to be drawn into his orbit. With a sharp script, tight direction, and an equally excellent supporting cast that includesWill SharpeandJennifer Grey,A Real Painis a real pleasure. –Taylor Gates

‘Emilia Pérez’
November 13
Jacques Audiard, the director behind such films asThe Sisters Brothers,Rust and Bone, andA Prophet, might not be the first person you think would create a musical crime comedy starringZoe SaldañaandSelena Gomez. However, the response toEmilia Pérezout of Cannes was rapturous, with the film winning the Jury Prize, as well as Best Actress for Saldaña, Gomez, andKarla Sofía Gascón. Saldaña stars as Rita, a lawyer who must assist a Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) in both escaping the authorities and undergoing her sex reassignment surgery. If anything, Audiard’s career so far has shown that he can do pretty much anything he sets his mind to, andit looks likeEmilia Pérezcould end up becoming one of the most acclaimed films of his career.–Ross Bonaime

What would the holidays be without an attempt to create another holiday classic? This year, we getRed One, in whichSanta Claus(an absolutely jackedJ.K. Simmons) gets kidnapped, leading the North Pole’s Head of Security, Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson) and bounty hunter Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans) to team up to save Santa and Christmas.Red Oneis apparently being envisioned as the beginning of a franchise that would reimagine various holiday mythologies, apparently with muscles, if this is anything to go off. But for a goofy holiday action-comedy,Red Onealso has a decent team behind it, including directorJake Kasdan(Jumanji,Walk Hard) and writerChris Morgan(the majority of the Fast and Furious franchise). –Ross Bonaime
After Santa Claus is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security and a notorious bounty hunter embark on a globe-spanning mission to rescue him. You only really need to say “an A24 horror movie” and half the world is already seated. But add to thatHugh Grantin a rare horror appearance and one of the best young performers working today (Sophie Thatcher), and the other half should surely follow. That’s not even mentioning the powerhouse duo of filmmakers behind the film,Scott BeckandBryan Woods, who penned the script for the horror sensationA Quiet Place, and wrote and directed the terrifying 2019 slasher,Haunt. Their new film,Hereticsees two Mormon preachers (played by Thatcher andChloe East) rapping on the door of the wrong guy. Hugh Grant’s Mr. Reed is, initially, the only person who seems interested in what they have to say about their Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, but once the the two girls realize something isn’t right, he won’t let them leave. As the trailer shows, Mr. Reed has set up a maze-like trap, asking them to choose between their faith and desire for survival.IfPaddington 2is any indication, Grant is as brilliant a villain as he is a rom-com lead, and it was only a matter of time before he could unleash all his refined evil on helpless victims. –Emma Kiely
Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed, becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.
‘Gladiator II’
November 22
Despite being 86 years old,Ridley Scottdoesn’t seem to be slowing down, and why should he, the man is a filmmaking icon.Gladiator 2, the long-awaited sequel to his 2001 Best Picture winner, trades inRussell Crowefor another outstanding ensemble of actors includingPaul Mescal,Pedro Pascal,Joseph Quinn, and two-time Academy Award winnerDenzel Washington. Scott may not be the most consistent director in the business when it comes to quality, he’s directed some all-time classics but has also turned in his fair share of misfires. We won’t know for a while whereGladiator 2will land on the pendulum, but one thing is for certain,it’s a movie that will need to be seen on the biggest screen possible.—Nate Richard

Wickedhas had a long road to the big screen, but this year, the wait is finally over. Well, for the beginning of the story, that is. The first part of the Tony Award-winning musical’s adaptation will hit theaters this November, withCynthia Erivostarring as the gravity-defying green girl andAriana Grandeas the pop-u-lar Glinda. The two initially butt heads when forced to room together at the magical Shiz University, but eventually, they end up forming an unexpected and life-changing friendship. The supporting cast is also an embarrassment of riches, with highlights including Oscar-winnerMichelle Yeohas Madame Morrible,Jeff Goldblumas the Wizard, andPeter Dinklageas Dr. Dillamond.Wicked’s a tough one to adapt, to be sure — it’s beloved, for one, and needs impressive visuals on a massive scale to feel immersive and true to the fantastical feeling of Oz. Luckily,Jon Chuis at the helm, and he’s no stranger to impressive movie musicals or glitz and glamor, as his directing resume includesIn the HeightsandCrazy Rich Asians. I think it’s entirely possible it can reachBarbie-level success — after all, black is this year’s pink. –Taylor Gates

‘Spellbound’

ButSpellboundis also directed byShrekco-directorVicky Jenson, who hasn’t directed an animated film since 2004’sShark Tale. Moana 2originally began as a limited streaming series on Disney+ back in 2020, but then, just a few months ago in May, Disney revealed that the project had been reworked into a theatrical sequel. It shouldn’t be a surprise, asMoanahas been one of the top films on Disney+ for quite some time, and with Disney prioritizing sequels for the foreseeable future, this makes sense as their big animated release for the end of the year.Moana 2has Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson) with a new crew for an adventure to the far seas of Oceania.Few Disney animated films have actually received theatrical releases, soMoana 2’s shift from TV to film shows that Disney has quite a bit of confidence in this franchise going forward. –Ross Bonaime
