Believe it or not, it’s already been five years since cameras checked in on the three units living together in suburban Los Angeles in ABC’sModern Family. The smash-hit sitcom dominated the airwaves from 2009 through 2020, scoring 22 Emmy wins and becoming one of themost successful live-action comedy serieson broadcast television ever. Since its final season premiered, however, the show has been a constant presence on streaming, drawing in viewers who wanted to revisit the Pritchetts, Dunphys, and Tuckers once again. Now, the series is once again enjoying an international surge on Disney+, rising to sixth in the world and keeping ahead of bothBlueyandOutlander: Blood of My Blood.
Modern Familywas inspired by series creatorsChristopher LloydandSteven Levitan’s own experiences with their families and the trials of growing up together in the modern world. It follows theunconventional and massive Pitchett-Dunphy-Tucker family, each segment of which deals with their own particular troubles as a specific type of family, whether they be a nuclear unit, a blended family, or a same-sex couple. At the head is the wealthy patriarch, Jay Prichett (Ed O’Neill), through whom everyone else is related in some way, and who is also trying to adjust to life with his passionate second wife, Gloria (Sofía Vergara), and their two sons. No matter how different they may be, however, they remain a tight-knit bunch, enduringthe many comical mishapsof their unusual, yet happy lives together.

Through its constantly growing and changing members,Modern Familymanaged to explore the many different aspects ofwhat it means to be a familythrough the lens of a sitcom mockumentary. From adopting children to kids leaving the nest, they experienced it all in aheartwarming and hilarious fashion, coming to a close with a series finale that saw most of the unit go their separate ways, though not without leaving the porch light on for everyone’s return. Such a big sitcom required an expansive cast, with O’Neill and Vergara joined byJulie Bowen,Ty Burrell,Jesse Tyler Ferguson,Eric Stonestreet,Sarah Hyland,Ariel Winter,Nolan Gould,Rico Rodriguez,Jeremy Maguire,Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, and more.
Could ‘Modern Family’ Ever Get Back Together for a Reunion?
Just like the Pritchetts, Dunphys, and Tuckers, the cast of the long-running sitcom has also split up for their own respective projects. There’s not much of a rush to get everyone back together like old times just yet, though. In an interview with Collider’sSteve Weintraublast month to talk about her role oppositeAdam SandlerinHappy Gilmore 2, Bowenwouldn’t rule out getting the band back togetherand assured she’s totally on board for whatever. Alas, nothing is in the works at this point, despite the original hopes of making a spin-off that would’ve centered on husbands Cam (Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Ferguson) and their adopted children after they moved to Missouri. “There are a few projects where you just go, ‘Yes. Whatever you need,’ Bowen said about a reboot. “Because it provided me with so much joy, and it has benefited me in every way — emotionally, financially, all the ways. So, you just show up. I would love that.”
Modern Familyis now streaming on Disney+ in select countries. In the U.S., it can be found on Hulu and Peacock. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on the biggest streaming hits throughout the year.
