Get your blue raincoats and jars of marmalade ready, because the belovedPaddingtonfranchise is set to return with a third installment, and it’s bound to be a sentimental one given the official title:Paddington In Peru.
What typically comes to mind when you think of the most celebrated titles in film history? The revolutionary mob dramaThe Godfather? The influential Japanese epicSeven Samurai? Maybe it’s even the delightful musical comedySingin' in the Rain? There are hundreds upon hundreds of other films that could enter the conversation, but in the world of more modern filmography, there are two films in particular that have become world-renowned for their feel-good tone, excellent filmmaking, and superb comedic timing. The first of these films isPaddington, a delightful sleeper hit based on the beloved children’s book series. There, audiences met a new version of the young bear, who is so much more than a cute little mammal in a coat and hat. His heritage as a Peruvian bear is unique, as he has the ability to think and speak as humans do (not to mention a predisposition for orange marmalade). Paddington (Ben Whishaw) lives a happy life in Peru with his Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton) and Uncle Pastuzo (Michael Gambon), but when tragedy strikes, Paddington’s Aunt instructs her nephew to go to Britain to find a safe new home. It proves easier said than done, but eventually, Paddington finds a new home with the Browns, who take the bear in as one of their own and protect him from an insane taxidermist.

The first film was a massive success, garnering critical acclaim and rock-solid box office numbers, but that proved only to be the beginning. That’s because the film’s sequel,Paddington 2, became a viral sensation following its release, quickly gaining the extremely rare achievement of a one hundred percent score on Rotten Tomatoes (before one critic tarnished the perfect score). Still, a consistent score of ninety-nine percent is nothing to scoff at, and everyone who saw the acclaimed film instantly fell in love with Paddington’s quest to get his Aunt Lucy the perfect birthday present.
After the second film, fans of the series have been craving a third film more than the protagonist bear craves marmalade. Despite adisappointing update from Ben Whishawsaying that production was still a ways off, those fears seem to finally be put to rest withthe announcement ofPaddington In Peru. To find out more about the highly anticipated threequel’s cast, plot, filming details, and more, here is everything we know so far aboutPaddington In Peru.

5Is There a Trailer for Paddington In Peru?
The first trailer forPaddington in Peruwas released by StudioCanal on June 12th, 2024, with Paddington and the Brown family embarking on their next ambitious adventure. The trailer begins fittingly enough with Paddington once again misunderstanding modern technology, with him struggling to take a passport photo ahead of his big trip to Peru. The reason he and his family are heading to his country of origin is because the innocent bear wants to make a long overdue visit to his beloved Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton). Once they get to the bear sanctuary where Paddington last saw Aunt Lucy all those years ago, he and the Browns are dismayed to learn that she has left the sanctuary for reasons unknown. With the help of a charismatic and handsome boat captain, Paddington and his friends and family set out into the Peruvian jungle to find Aunt Lucy.
4Who’s In the Cast of Paddington In Peru?
We’ll have a ton of new characters in thePaddingtonsequel. Academy-Award winnerOlivia Coleman(The Favourite) is joining the cast as one of the nuns at Aunt Lucy’s sanctuary, and her joining the cast seems to be a dream come true for the beloved star. Coleman said in an interview with Collider that she is a lifelong fan ofPaddingtonand is very much looking forward to being a part of the franchise:
“Yes, I remember thatthere used to be a Paddington cartoon on the telly when I was little, which was these black and white drawings of the Brown family, and I don’t think they really moved. The only one that really moved, in quite a stiff and staccato way, was Paddington, with his blue coat and red hat. Michael Hordern was the Narrator. I loved that as a kid. And then, when the films came out, I had small kids and I remember watching with our eldest two when he puts the toothbrush in his ears, and he has that lovely cross-eyed pleasurable face, and they giggled. I thought, ‘Oh, my entire family are in.’ They were in love with Paddington from that moment on. So yeah, when that opportunity came up, I said, ‘Yes, please!'”

Academy Award nomineeAntonio Banderas(Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) is also set to star in the film as Hunter Cabot - the friendly boat captain that will be helping Paddington navigate the Peruvian jungle.Carla Tous(30 Coins) stars as Hunter’s daughter, Gina Cabot.Rachel Zeglerwas previously attached to the role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
Emily Mortimer(Lars and the Real Girl)will be taking over the role of Mary Brown, replacingSally Hawkins. Hawkins talked about leaving the franchise, saying:

For me it has felt the right time to hand the reins over to another, and one can’t get much better than the truly wonderful Emily Mortimer, she is extraordinarily special. She will embody the essence of Mary Brown and yet make it utterly her own.
Returning cast members are Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) as Paddington,Hugh Bonneville(Downton Abbey) as Henry Brown,Madeleine Harrisas Judy Brown,Samuel Joslinas Jonathan Brown,Julie Walters(Mama Mia! Here We Go Again) as Mrs. Bird, Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), andJim Broadbent(Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) as Mr. Gruber.

Here’s some wishful thinking:Florence Pughhas previously expressed interest in joining the franchise. Could we possibly see her and Paddington making marmalade sandwiches together in a future movie? We can’t rule it out just yet!
3Who’s Making Paddington in Peru?
The first and secondPaddingtonfilms were directed byPaul King, and while he won’t be directing this time around, he’ll still be attached toPaddington In Peruas a writer and producer. Directing duties this time around will be taken over byDougal Wilson, who will be making their directorial debut with the upcoming project. Paul King is also joined by a stacked writing team withMark Burton(Shaun the Sheep Movie),Simon Farnaby(The Phantom of the Open),Jon Foster(The Adventures of Paddington), andJames Lamont(The Amazing World of Gumball).
2What’s ‘Paddington In Peru’ About?
The title ofPaddington in Perugives away quite a few hints as to what the sequel will entail. As mentioned above, Peru is Paddington’s country of origin and was the place where he grew up with his Aunt and Uncle. Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo aren’t Paddington’s biological aunt and uncle, however. As we see inPaddington 2, the pair saved Paddington from a running river and took him in. That was long before Paddington met the Brown family and came into their care, but now it seems that the bear hopes to return home.
The official plot synopsis forPaddington in Perureads as follows:
“PADDINGTON IN PERU brings Paddington’s story to Peru as he returns to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru.
