MGM has announced the full voice cast for their upcoming animated feature film adaptation ofThe Addams Family. It was previously revealed thatOscar Isaacwould be filling the role of Gomez Addams, and now he’ll be joined byCharlize Theronas Morticia,Chloe Grace Moretzas Wednesday,Finn Wolfhard(Stranger Things) as Pugsley,Nick Krollas Uncle Fester,Bette Midleras Grandmama, andAllison Janneyas the family’s arch nemesis Margaux Needler.
Sausage PartydirectorsConrad VernonandGreg Tiernanare at the helm of the film, which follows the Addams family as their lives begin to unravel when they face off against a crafty reality TV host while also preparing for the extended family to arrive for a major celebration.
Matt Liebermanwrote the screenplay for the new film, which is based onCharles Addams’ iconic cartoon series. This cast is pretty swell, and while a live-action Addams Family movie would’ve been preferable (especially with Isaac and Theron in those lead roles), the ensemble is excellent regardless and I’m curious to see what Vernon and Tiernan do here.
The Addams Familywas previously adapted into a live-action feature film in 1991 withRaul Julia,Anjelica Huston, andChristopher Lloydin the lead roles.Barry Sonnenfeld(Men in Black) directed that film and a sequel,Addams Family Values, which still stands as one of the best sequels ever made.
In a statement, Vernon discussed going back to the look of the New Yorker cartoons for this new animated film:
“Greg and I have always been a fan of the Addams Family in past versions, so when we set out to make this movie, we were excited to do something new. With that in mind, I drew from the brilliantly original Charles Addams New Yorker cartoons for the look of the film and decided to tell the story of how Gomez and Morticia meet, find their house and start their family. This unique approach is what drew me in to direct the film. The reimagining also extends to the stellar cast we’ve put together who will each bring their own spin to our film that will appeal to longtime fans of the Addams and introduce them to a new generation.”
