With the premieres ofPortlandiaand the revampedX-Fileshitting later this month, the 2016 television season is already getting off to a promising start, and there’s been a lot of good news coming down the pike for the first quarter. Early reports for the series premiere ofPreacherout of this week’s TCA have been very positive on the whole, and there’s been a lot of really strong gossip coming off of HBO’s latest project fromMartin ScorseseandTerrence Winter,Vinyl, which premieres on February 14th. And now, we’ve got a taste of what to expect from theBetter Call Saulseason 2 premiere, which will be hitting AMC on February 15th, through a brand new trailer for the beloved crime drama. As one can surmise, the rift that opened up between Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) and his addled but brilliant brother, Chuck (Michael McKean), in the final episodes of the show’s excellent first season has turned Jimmy into a full-on cynic. What we will likely be seeing in the second season is the final throes of Jimmy’s altruistic self, the man thatRhea Seehorn’s Kim loves and finds herself attracted to in certain instances, and the birth of Saul Goodman, the sleazy conman-lawyer who so dutifully servedBryan Cranston’s Walter White inBreaking Bad.
Of course, seeing as this isVince Gilligan’s game, the series will no doubt feature a more complicated transformation than simply turning crooked for the money and the semblance of power, and there’s likely to be a more focused look at Saul’s relationship with Mike (Jonathan Banks). Regardless of where all this lands when the show starts back up, the return of Odenkirk’s character marks the continuation of one of the more fascinating performances and personas to hit the television landscape in years, to the point that Saul Goodman could very well end up being as interesting a study in lapsed morals as Walter White himself.
