Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Marvel debut as Black Adam has been anticipated by fans and The Rock himself for over a decade, so everyone is definitely ready for this DC project to come to life.Black Adamwas first introduced in 1945 and was revamped byDC Comicsin the 90s. It seems like The Rock will be playing the 90s version of Black Adam, who had a redemption arc in the comics, turning him into more of an anti-hero than just a villain.

Fans thought they might see him inShazam!(2019), and although the character didn’t make his appearance then, the film did set up the introduction of Black Adam. DC confirmed that the film would essentially be split into two, starting withShazam!,then following withBlack Adamat a later date. So far, there’s no full-length trailer, but the teaser and set leaks have given fans plenty of hints about the film.
Who Is Black Adam?
Black Adam was originally intended to be a one-off villain when he first appeared in Fawcett Comics’The Marvel Family comic bookand was meant to die in his first appearance. Luckily, he was brought back to life by DC in the 1970s as the main nemesis ofShazam. Black Adam’s story starts thousands of years ago when the wizard Shazam chose him as a successor to his power and wields him with powers similar to his own. But Black Adam doesn’t use his powers to call upon the Greek gods like Shazam – he calls upon the gods of Egyptian myth.

For years, Black Adam protects the people of Egypt. This all changes when his homeland is destroyed, and his family murdered. The destruction causes Black Adam to lose control and go on a killing rampage. Shazam is eventually able to stop him by trapping him in a magical scarab buried in a tomb for thousands of years. Centuries later, we meet Theo Adam, who joins Billy Batson’s parents on an archeologist expedition and discovers Black Adam’s tomb and the scarab holding his powers. Theo kills the Batson’s and takes these powers for himself. Theo then becomes a human counterpart for Black Adam, like how Billy is the mortal counterpart of Shazam. When Theo eventually returns to the United States, Billy Batson had already been selected by Shazam to obtain his powers. Theo notices his resemblance to C.C. Batson, his father whom he murdered. The foes battle, and Billy wins the fight.
What IsBlack AdamAbout?
The film will be a spin-off and sequel toShazam!and it’s going to be all about the infamous villain/antihero Black Adam.Shazam!set up the character when Billy learned about the great warrior who was gifted with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. The warrior didn’t become the hero they had hoped for but instead destroyed entire civilizations. Comic fans immediately knew this was about Black Adam.
DC has been leaning into its darker side recently, with movies such asThe JokerandThe Batman,so fans expectBlack Adamto be a brutal, dark origin story. Specific plot details so far have been vague, the synopsis reads:Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods – and imprisoned just as quickly – Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.
Who Will Be In The Film?
Apart from Dwayne Johnson starring as the titular Black Adam himself, the film boasts a star-studded cast to back him up. The Rock’s character will have to face theJustice Society of America(the JSA), which contains several super-poweredcomic book characters. Noah Centineo will be playing member of the JSA, Albert Rothstein AKA Atom Smasher. Rothstein can alter his molecular density to obtain superstrength and grow to the size of a skyscraper. Pierce Brosnan takes on the role of Doctor Fate, a heroic sorcerer, and member of the JSA. Quintessa Swindell is playing Cyclone, a powerful JSA member who can control the wind.
Additional characters in the film include Hawkman, who will be played by Aldis Hodge, an archeologist/reincarnation of an Egyptian prince. Sarah Shahi will be playing Adrianna Tomaz, the embodiment of the goddess Isis, and Black Adam’s love interest in the comics. Director Jaume Collet-Serra is behind the camera.
When IsBlack AdamGoing To Be Released?
The upcoming DC film has been in the works for years now and has been delayed more than once. The movie was originally set to hit theaters in December 2021. This release was delayed due to Covid. When production started back up, the new release date became August 24, 2025. After yet another delay, The Rock confirmed on Instagram that the flick will be coming to the big screen on August 08, 2025.
Fans are anticipating a trailer to be released soon with more details about the flick.
