Although a box office and critical disaster upon its 2006 arrival,Michael Mann’sfilm adaptation of the hit seriesMiami Vicehas gained astrong cult following ever since, with many calling it one of the most underrated movies of the 2000s. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising then that, almost two decades on, the film is finally finding a semblance of success, officially joining thetop 10 most-streamed movies on Starzas of Tuesday, July 18, 2025.

Having since beencritically re-evaluatedby many and labeled one of the director’s most radical films,Miami Vicehas gained a strong following in spite of its initial reception. StarringColin FarrellandJamie Foxxas undercover detectives Crockett and Tubbs, the film drew just a 47% critics' score on review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes, with the movie faring worse with audiences, as they awardedMiami Vicejust 43%. It would seem that the aforementioned Farrell would agree, with the Irish Academy Award nominee oncesaying of the film, “Miami Vice? I didn’t like it so much — I thought it was style over substance, and I accept a good bit of the responsibility.”

How Did ‘Miami Vice’ Perform at the Box Office?

Produced on a reported budget of $135 million,Miami Vicewould need to return at least $270 million to even begin to be considered financially fruitful. Alas, it couldn’t even come close, with the restoration of a classic television series only managing to turn in 1.2 times its budget with aglobal total of just $164.9 million. This total was split between a domestic haul of $63.4 million and $101.4 million from overseas markets, with a further $38.1 million from home media sales doing nothing to heal financial wounds.At the 2006 global box office,Miami Vicefinished as the 27th highest-grossing film, failing to outperform the likes ofBlood DiamondandScary Movie 4.
