Dwayne Johnson’s “king of the concrete jungle” movieRampagereigns supreme over the Friday box office in its opening weekend with a $11.5 million debut. There’s little surprise that audiences were willing to check out this smash-em-up spectacle movie which, as I said inmy review, is perfectly entertaining, mindless fun. What remains to be seen is if The Rock’s charisma has enough heft to carry the film to the top spot throughout the weekend or if horror film upstartsA Quiet PlaceandTruth or Dareare going to make a play.

The best contender for toppling the mega-monster movie isJohn Krasinski’s surprise horror hit that also starsEmily Blunt. A critical darling and a crowd pleaser,A Quiet Placecontinues to enjoy positive buzz in its second weekend in theaters. With an estimated $33-35 million for the frame,A Quiet Placewill possibly overtakeRampage’s current position–it’s estimated at $31-32 million for the weekend but its A- CinemaScore may boost that–and will likely cross the $100 million domestic mark in only 10 days of release. Impressive.

Equally impressive is the continued efficiency of Blumhouse Productions' fare. The latest mini-budget horror film,Truth or Dare, has already made over $8 million in its one-day debut, which roughly doubles its estimated sub-$5 million budget. Even with hit-or-miss films, Blumhouse’s approach often nets the company small wins and the occasional breakout hit with franchise potential.Truth or Dareis already the former and may prove to be the latter.

Rounding out the top five spots are the returning Universal Pictures comedyBlockersand Warner Bros. massive mash-up movie,Ready Player One.
