While everything else can be in flux, there is one pretty solid rule to the box office: kid flicks always do well. There are comparatively fewer of them than to go around, and so when parents are looking for some weekend activity time that includes trekking off to the theaters to see the latest, those numbers tend to soar. When I was a tyke I was taken to see every Disney movie that came out, and there are so many more options now than there were then. And the beat marches on, which means it’s of little surprise that Disney’sThe Jungle Book, directed byJon Favreau, continued to dominate the Friday box office.
Last Friday, it hit $32.4 million (making it the second largest April opening of all time), and while this week it has seemingly dropped quite a bit (with $16 million), its current total is over $147 million. So yeah, it’s doing pretty well. Disney properties are bookending the Top 5 this week as well, withZootopiacoming in with a little over $1.7 million. But what’s more interesting is that its total ($311 million) is really creeping up onBatman v Superman($315 million).
As for the number 2 slot, whileThe Huntsman: Winter’s Warhad a smaller budget than its predecessor, it seems like it won’t be making nearly as much in the box office, either. Debuting at around half the numbers ofSnow White and the Huntsman, poor reviews may have had a major impact on it only bringing it just a little over $7 million to start. The whole thing is unfortunate, since the movie’s largely female cast (Charlize Theron,Emily Blunt, andJessica Chastain) are pretty stellar. But, it’s also another non-ThorChris Hemsworthleading feature that has seen some struggles.
Barbershop: The Next Cutcontinues to perform very well, bringing in $3 million and totaling over $28 million, while theMelissa McCarthyvehicleThe Bosshasn’t done as well as was hoped, bringing in a little over $1 million this week, though with a total of $45 million.
Quite a bit out of the Top 5 but notable,A Hologram for the King, starringTom Hanksbanked $377,000, whileElvis & Nixon— another Tribeca premiere — has garnered $149,000.
