Ginny Deals With Racism in the Classroom in Season 2
With so much going on in her personal life, it seems unfair that Ginny has issues at school as well. Ginny is a good student, especially in English, but since she moved to Wellsbury, her teacher, Mr. Gitten (Jonathan Potts),has treated her with contempt and racism. This is especially evident inSeason 2whenhe singles her out and asks her to pick a book that represents the Black experience. Not only is she the only student asked to do this, but he expects her to create a lesson plan for it as well, basically asking her to do his job.
Though she debates not doing it, Ginny chooses a book, but rather than teaching her class, she walks out and drops the class. Max encourages the scene she made, but Ginny argues with Max for not acknowledging how Gitten had been treating her, and Max realizes she was in the wrong. She and Ginny’s ex, Hunter (Mason Temple), organize a coup in their class, continuing to talk about the book Ginny picked while Gitten tries to move on to something else. Zion suggests Ginny enroll in a college-level English class, so Gitten’s racism doesn’t derail her education.

Georgia is resistant, but Gil blackmails her intoletting him see Austin. Gil tells Cynthia that Georgia framed him for embezzling, and that’s why he was arrested. While that’s not beneath Georgia if she believed there was a danger to her children, the flashbacks prove that he embezzled from his company before he even met her. The glimpses of their past also show that Gil abused Georgia, and she struggled to get away from him.
When Georgia tries to limit Gil’s contact with Austin, he becomes aggressive, and surprisingly, Cynthia helps Georgia out of a confrontation. Georgia decides to return the favor bysmothering her slowly-dying husband, Tom (Vincent Legault), and freeing Cynthia of the painful, drawn-out process, but things grow complicated when Austin sees her do it.
