Today the Gotham Awards nominations were announced, officially kicking off what’s sure to be a unique awards season. Unveiled by the Independent Filmmaker Project, the IFP Gotham Awards traditionally signals the beginning of awards season as the first group out, unveiling nominations for the best of the year as chosen by distinguished juries made up of prominent film critics.
Notably,Kelly Reichardt’s indie filmFirst Cowreceived the most nominations with four, including Best Feature, Best Screenplay (by Reichardt andJon Raymond), Bst Actor (John Magaro), and Breakthrough Actor (Orion Lee). But perhaps even more notably, for the first time ever all five films nominated for Best Feature were directed by women. In addition toFirst Cowthey includeKitty Green’s Weinstein-inspired workplace abuse dramaThe Assistant,Eliza Hittman’s abortion dramaNever Rarely Sometimes Always,Chloé Zhao’s acclaimed road dramaNomadland, andNatalie Erika James’ Australian horror filmRelic.

Chadwick Bosemanreceived a posthumous Best Actor nomination for his role in Netflix’s upcoming filmMa Rainey’s Black Bottomwhich could be the first in a long line of nominations as this awards season rolls out (there’s already talk of him winning the Oscar), andRiz Ahmedscored a Best Actor nomination for Amazon’s buzzworthySound of Metal.
Additionally, the out-of-nowhere sci-fi dramaThe Vast of Night(streaming on Amazon) picked up nominations for Best Screenplay and Breakthrough Director, whileCharlie Kafuman’s Netflix featureI’m Thinking of Ending Thingsscored acting nominations forJesse PlemonsandJesse Buckley.
