One of the many films to world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was the dark comedyGreener Grass. Written, directed and starringJocelyn DeBoerandDawn Luebbe, the film is based on their SXSW award-winning 2016 short film by the same name. While most movies are easy to describe, I’ll admitGreener Grassis like nothing I’ve ever seen and can see it playing midnight festivals for a long time. The film is set in a demented suburbia where adults wear braces on their straight teeth, parents are willing to give up their kid to a neighbor with no warning, characters wear underwear as scarves, and no one wants to be the one to go first through a four-way stop sign. Trust me,Greener Grassis funny, weird, and every time you think you know where it’s going, it takes a completely unexpected turn. As someone that has seen almost every movie trope countless times, when a movie likeGreener Grasscomes along, it’s a welcome delight. The film also starsBeck Bennett,Neil Casey,Mary Holland, andD’Arcy Carden.
Shortly before seeing the film, Beck Bennett, Mary Holland, Dawn Luebbe, and Jocelyn DeBoer came by the Collider studio at the Kia Supper Suite in Park City to talk about the film. They talked about being at Sundance, how they explain the film, why the characters wear braces, competition in suburban life, the challenge of keeping the very funny cast on-point and choosing which improvisations to keep in the edit, and more.
