It’s not a bird, it’s a plane. The newSupermanmovie has just flown past a massive milestone at the box office. This week, theJames Gunn(Guardians of the Galaxytrilogy) interpretation of the DC superhero passed the domestic gross of $291 million. Why is that number important? Because it is the total that 2013’sMan of Steelmade domestically back when it premiered. The new iteration of the ultimateDChero is officially thehighest-grossing soloSupermanmovie in history.

Per Box Office Mojo,Supermanis now at $292 TK million domestically — which isn’t a huge advantage but, at the very least, it suggests thatDavid Corenswet(Twisters) has been welcomed by North American audiences with (mostly) open arms. Despite some controversy regarding what the new version of thesuperhero represents, the movie has kept a steady performance at the box office that signals to the newDCUthat audiences are willing to give thenew cinematic universea chance.

When you factor in the global box office, however, the story is a bit different. Over a decade ago,Zack Snyder’s treatment ofSupermanwas far more popular outside the U.S., with $376 raked in across the rest of the world. 2025’sSuperman, however, is still struggling to make it past $250 million internationally. Even though it is by no means a flop — it ranks among the 10 highest-grossing movies of the year —Warner Bros.will certainly keep a close eye on the blockbuster’s performance, since there’s a slate of movieswhose future is informed by how this one performs.

What’s Next For The DCU?

In 2026, The newly-formed DCU will already take two big risks with movies that feature non-tentpole characters from the DC universe. In June,Supergirltook over movie theatersafter making a cameo inSuperman. It will be the first blockbuster led by the character.Milly Alcock(House of the Dragon) will play the title role and Krypto the dog is returning to wreak havoc outside Earth. The movie will reportedly featureJason Momoa(Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) making hisDC-reintroduction as Lobo.

After that, it’s time forClayface— a movie that will add a bit ofbody horrorto the superhero subgenre.Tom Rhys Harries(The Return) will play the title character, who was previously featured in the DC animationHarley Quinn(voiced byAlan Tudyk) and in the anime seriesSuicide Squad Isekai, voiced byAnna Nagase.
