True DetectiveSeason 1 has long been regarded as the anthology series' best. StarringWoody Harrelsonas Martin Hart andMatthew McConaugheyas Rustin Cohle, the season launched the series created byNic Pizzolattofor HBO. There have been four seasons of the show created overthe past 11 years, each with a different cast and characters. Pizzolatto had been at the helm of the first three before departing, andIssa Lopeztook over. Pizzolatto recently appeared on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, where he teased a Season 1True Detectivereunion, following Rust and Marty in an all-new story. “I actually have another story forCohle and Hartthat — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day,” he said in the 65th episode of the podcast. Pizzolatto added:
“It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”

‘True Detective’ Creator Nic Pizzolatto Explains His Departure From the Series
The show famously returned for a fourth installment titledNight Countrywithout Pizzolatto. Like many HBO shows of late, the season was atthe center of a culture war, and Pizzolatto seemed to side withthe season’s harshest critics. “I was the one who walked away from my contract at the end of 2019,” he shared on the podcast. “I believe if I had given them a good script for another season ofTrue Detective, I believe they would have gone for it. But I myself was spiritually tired of walking in that much darkness. And dealing with such dark materials. And then I got full custody of my daughter back, and that was a situation where I really needed to be a father… and I had to step away from a lot of work in 2020," Pizzolatto added.
The former creative affirmed that it was “right and appropriate” for HBO to move on without him after he removed himself from the show.True Detectivehas been renewed forSeason 5 with Lopezstill leading the charge. The latest updatesabout the seasonreveal that it will take place in Jamaica Bay, New York. HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film,Francesca Orsi, teased a “different milieubut just as powerful” after reading the scripts of two episodes. The season is anticipated to launch in 2027.
