20th Century Fox has released a newIndependence Day: ResurgenceTV spot for directorRoland Emmerich’s sci-fi blockbuster sequel, and it features the return of an incredibly memorable character from the first film.Star TrekalumBrent Spinermade a serious impression inIndependence Dayas an Area 51 scientist whose enthusiasm for the alien species made him an easy target to be used as a human speakerphone. But as was revealed during the casting process, Spiner’s character survived, and we see Dr. Brackish Okun back in action in this new TV spot, along with adifferentcharacter meeting a fate similar to Okun’s in the 1996 film.
Resurgencetakes place 20 years after the events of the first film, as humanity has used the alien technology left behind to create a massive defense program to protect the planet. The aliens, however, have gathered reinforcements and are now back to finish the job, and it’s up to those that spearheaded the fight against the invaders the first time around to find a way to prevent an even larger scale invasion.

While Hollywood’s new penchant for mining 90s pop culture nuggets simply for the sake of nostalgia is somewhat irksome,Independence Day: Resurgenceseems fully aware that it’s a nostalgia trip, and I’m surprisingly excited to dive back into this world once more. I mean really, what’s not to like aboutJeff Goldblumleading a sci-fi blockbuster?
