Apple TV+has been a thing for a little over half a decade, but the streaming service has proven itself as an excellent destination for original scripted content. When the service launched with a handful of shows in 2019, it enlisted a slew of A-list actors as leads.Jason Momoastarred in one of the earliest shows on the service,See, as Baba Voss. Two years afterSeeended, Momoa is back on Apple TV+ with a new drama show,Chief of War. Set in precolonial Hawai’i, the epic historical drama has been a hit with viewers and critics, currently sitting at 89% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, it is the most-watched show on the streamer currently, according to FlixPatrol, beating the likes ofFoundationandSmokefor the top position. Two episodes have aired so far.
Chief of Waris ambitious in the story it tells and the scale at which it does. Historical epics have been made, but many don’t focus on places like Hawai’i at a time like that shown in the show. Collider’sAidan Kelleyreviewed the seriesand compared it to several others in the same niche. He applauded the drama’s ability to stand out by embracing what makes it unique. An excerpt from his review reads:

Chief of Warcertainly matches the competition in terms of scale and ambition, but its true secret to success is how it boosts and exemplifies a culture that has been underrepresented at best and misrepresented at worst in the entertainment sphere. There is virtually no movie or show that embraces and explores Hawaiian culture and history likeChief of Wardoes.
