Despite being tailed byJames Gunn’sSupermanand with Marvel’sThe Fantastic Four: First Stepsaround the corner, Universal’sJurassic World Rebirthis proving to be quite resolute at the global box office. The moviepassed a couple of major milestonesin its third weekend of release, as it continues its quest to pass the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide. Each of its three predecessors grossed over $1 billion globally, which means thatRebirthwill absolutely have to as well if it wants to be perceived as a hit. It did, however, cost significantly less to produce than those films, and will be released on PVOD platforms earlier than expected.
With $275 million domestically and another $372 million from overseas markets,Jurassic World Rebirthhasgrossed a grand total of $648 million at the worldwide box officeso far. This weekend, it overtook the entire lifetime haul ofThe Lost World: Jurassic Park, directorSteven Spielberg’s follow-up to the landmark hitJurassic Park.Rebirthalso overtook hits such as Spielberg’sWar of the Worlds,Ang Lee’sLife of Pi, andMel Gibson’s controversial Biblical epicThe Passion of the Christ. BeforeDeadpool & Wolverinerolled around last year,The Passion of the Christwas the top-grossing R-rated film in domestic box office history.
It’s poised to get a sequel, titledThe Resurrection of the Christ, with Gibson and starJim Caviezelset to return. The movie was controversial upon release, offending the sensibilities of certain sections of the audience, and raising eyebrows for its depiction of violence. It earned middling reviews, as hasRebirth. Produced ona reported budget of $180 million, the movieentered production before a director was attached. Universal reportedly didn’t want a repeat ofJurassic World Dominion, which had pushed itself into a narrative corner that didn’t appeal to audiences.
‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Was Given a Prime Summer Release by Universal
Eventually,GodzillaandRogue One: A Star Wars StoryhelmerGareth Edwardswas brought on board, withScarlett Johansson,Mahershala Ali, andJonathan Baileyleading the cast. The movie appears to have settled at a so-so 52% score onRotten Tomatoes, which isn’t where it would want to be, but at least it’s higher than the 29% thatDominionscored only a few years ago.Rebirthisexpected to kick-start a trilogy of its own, having proven that dinosaurs are probably the safest bet that Universal can make these days, despite havingChristopher Nolan,Jordan Peele, and the Fast Family in its corner.
