Widely reported to be the final film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe — a series of superhero spin-offs that sort of share continuity with theTom Holland-fronted blockbusters —Kraven the Hunterdebuted to disappointing numbers this weekend. StarringAaron Taylor-Johnsonand directed by the Oscar-nominatedJ.C. Chandor,Kraven the Hunterdelivered franchise-low numbers across the board, on the back of terrible reviews and poor audience reception.
The film made just around $11 million domestically and another $15 million from overseas territories, fora cumulative global debut of around $26 million. By comparison, the much-deridedMadame Webgrossed $15 million stateside and $50 million worldwide in its first weekend. The equally mockedMorbiusdebuted with almost $40 million in North America alone. The franchise’s downward spiral has been staggering to behold — the three Venom movies excluded.

Of its six total installments, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has only seen success in the form of the Venom trilogy. Combined, the three movies have made over $1.8 billion worldwide, which, for context, is still around $100 million shy of the lifetime global haul ofSpider-Man: No Way Home. Nevertheless, even the third installment inTom Hardy’s spin-off trilogy, the recentVenom: The Last Dance, grossed over $470 million globally. If it’s lucky,Kraven the Hunterwill hit a quarter of that number when all is said and done.
‘Kraven the Hunter’ Was Delayed Because of Last Year’s Strikes
The movieopened to toxic reviewsand was outright rejected by audiences, who gave ita series-low C CinemaScore. It currently holds a 15% rating on the aggregator websiteRotten Tomatoes, which is the same as that ofMorbius, and only a few points aboveMadame Web’s 11% RT score. In his review, Collider’sAidan Kelleydescribed the film as a “toothless” conclusion to the franchise, which was conceived to mimic the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The one thing that these movies have going in their favor is that they didn’t cost all that much to produce.Venom 3was produced on a reported budget of $120 million, whileKraven the Hunterreportedly cost $110 million. This is around half of what studios normally spend on superhero movies these days. Also starringAriana DeBose,Christopher Abbott,Fred Hechinger,Alessandro NivolaandRussell Crowe,Kraven the Hunteris playing in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
