The latter of which just cleaned up the box office, making over $30 million worldwide after becoming a critical darling. However, if you need something else to watch with Thatcher after seeing her outlastCompanion,her 2023Stephen Kingadaptation has just found a new home.
Rob Savage’sThe Boogeymanis now haunting horror fans for free onTubi. When the film was released in the summer of 2023, it became a modest box office hit.Boogeymanmade over $67 million on a $35 million budget. This nightmare was also relatively well received, featuring a positive 61% critic rating onRotten Tomatoesalongside a slightly higher 66% audience score. There was a ton of talent in the cast as well. Alongside Thatcher,BoogeymanstarredChris Messina(Birds of Prey),David Dastmalchian(Dune),Vivien Lyra Blair(Obi-Wan Kenobi). If that wasn’t enough, the film was written byScott BeckandBryan Woods. Not only were they the masterminds behindA Quiet Place, theywould go on to direct Thatcherin the critically-acclaimedHeretic.
What’s ‘The Boogeyman’ About?
Based on the King short storyof the same name,the film follows Sadie Harper (Thatcher) and her younger sister Sawyer (Blair) after the tragic loss of their mother. Their father (Messina), who works as a therapist, is trying to help them cope, but that’s easier said than done as he’s having trouble adjusting to their new reality too. It gets even worse when a disturbed man (Dastmalchian) seemingly dies by suicide in their house. This leads to a dark entity latching onto their family.If they’re going to survive, they have to unite as a family and facetheir traumatogether to take down this dreadful Boogeyman.
While the film’s concept is far from original, Savage’s raw direction and the relatable emotional hooks found in the heart of the story stopThe Boogeymanfrom just being another haunted house film. This is also a very scary film thanks toSavage’s reliance on a thick atmosphere that actually reminds you that jump scares can be an art form whenexecuted properly.Finally, this was agreat leading showcase for Thatcher, who has now firmly cemented her place as a modern horror “Scream Queen” and “Final Girl”.
