DCis in the good graces of moviegoers again thanks toJames Gunn’sSuperman. The film starringDavid Corenswethas restored faith in the brand. Not too dissimilar to howTim Burton’sBatmanchanged the course of that brooding character and company as a whole for decades to come. Now, as DC breathes fresh life into the superhero genre,Burton’sBatmanreturns with new figures from Mezco Toyz.

A part ofMezco’s 5 Points nostalgic series, Wave 2 ofBatman(1989) collection includes three figures:Cape Glide Batman, Museum MayhemJoker, and a Joker Goon. The latter of which is two figures in one. Batman’s figure is based on the opening scene, while The Joker takes inspiration from the middle of the movie, during which The Dark Knight has to save Vickie Vale from The Clown Prince of Crime at the museum. “You Wanna Get Nuts? Let’s Get Nuts!”

Michael Keaton’s BatmanandJack Nicholson’s Joker remain one of the most iconic arch rivals in film history. Since they duked it out in 1989, “Bat-Mania,” as they called it, never truly went away. The memorable characters have become variousaction figures, Hot Toys, and LEGO sets over the years. The Burton-helmed film just celebrated its 35th anniversary last year, bringing a fresh new wave of merch, including Funko Pops and apparel collections.

After Batman, Keaton would go on to reprise his DC role in the 1992 sequelBatman Returns. The Christmas-themed gothic tale saw him battlingMichelle Pfeiffer’s CatwomanandDanny DeVito’s Penguin. The much darker continuation caused Warner Bros. to get cold feet on a third film. They eventually replaced Keaton and Burton withVal Kilmerand directorJoel Schumacherfor 1995’sBatman Forever.

However, Keaton would return over three decades later as The Caped Crusader inThe Flash. While that film was critically panned, Keaton’s batty comeback was well worth the wait. The actor was also set to return for DC’sBatgirlfilm, but that was canceled in 2022 and used as a tax write-off for Warner Bros. WithRobert Patterson’sThe Batmanuniverse in full swing and DCU’sThe Brave and the Boldon the horizon. It looks like we’ve seen the last of Keaton’s Batman on the big screen. That said, his beloved version lives on in the comic seriesBatman ‘89: Echoes.
