Ryan Murphyhas found his latest muse for what will become the fourth season of his dramatized true-crime series,Monster, but, this time, he’s going a different route. In the first two seasons, he told the stories ofJeffrey DahmerandLyle and Erik Menendez, respectively, while the upcoming third installment will follow the life and crimes committed byEd Gein. But, Season 4 is set to put its focus onLizzie Borden, who, unlike the men she’s now forced to keep company with, was acquitted of the brutal murders of her father and stepmother in 1892. According to Variety, the team is on track to pick up cameras and get to work in the fall, but Netflix has yet to announce the title’s renewal, so we’ll need to wait for specifics. Meanwhile, we’re still sitting at the edge of our seats waiting for the streamer to give us an update about Season 3, which will seeSons of Anarchyalum,Charlie Hunnam, as the Wisconsin serial killer known as The Butcher of Plainfield, aka Gein.

From an incredibly dark and inappropriate nursery rhyme to movies, the story of Borden has been solidified as a piece of pop culture. Those whoreallywant to experience a chunk of morbid history can even rent a room in the house where it all went down, which is now a bed and breakfast — quaint! The story behind the bloody obsession took place in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1892 when Borden’s father,Andrew Borden, and her step-mother,Abby Borden, were slain in cold blood by way of an axe in the family’s home. Suspicion immediately fell onto Borden, but she would eventually be acquitted of the crimes and go on to live out her life in Fall River. The Borden case is a true headscratcher, as there are plenty of possibilities that other characters could have been involved with the gruesome deaths, with another potential suspect being Borden’s maternal uncle,John Morse.

What Will Ryan Murphy’s Version of the Lizzie Borden Story Look Like?

With so many question marks covering the case, the Borden murders will undoubtedly go down as one of history’s most confusing whodunnits, which is why we’re wondering what led Murphy to go down this particular road for a new season ofMonster. It isn’t clear whether theGleeandDoctor Odysseycreator will lean into all the suspicion surrounding the other potential players in the murders, or if he — like so many other directors and producers — will simply pour more gasoline on the “Borden did it” fire.

Over the last decade, numerous productions have told what they believe to be the true version of the story, with Lifetime backing the 2014 made-for-TV-movie,Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, which starredChristina Ricci. More salacious and farther away from what we know to be true wasCraig Macneill’s 2018 feature-length production titledLizzie, which starredChloë Sevigny as Borden and Kristen Stewartas the Borden family’s maid, Bridget Sullivan. The film proposed that the two women were lovers and that their hidden relationship is what led to the murders.
