While HBO does not have a definitive date forthe much-anticipatedsecond season ofThe Last of Us, viewers can expect to revisit life after the apocalypse this April. The network has begun sharinginformation about the seasonapproximately two months away, revealing some new characters, a teaser, a description, and posters. Season 2 introduces new characters and revisits familiar ones as the world becomes even more dangerous. According to the logline below, a time jump finds Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) on different sides five years after the first season’s events. HBO released some new images that show the arrival of new characters whose lives intersect with the old ones.
“Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
The images above show major new and returning characters in Season 2. Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) party, consisting of Owen (Spencer Lord), Mel (Ariel Barer), Nora (Tati Gabrielle), and Manny (Danny Ramirez), brave the elements as they trek the unforgiving winter terrain. Meanwhile, Bella and Joel have settled into their lives in the past five years, and Bella has made some new friends. One image shows her withJesse (Young Mazino), a character described as “a pillar of his community who puts everyone else’s needs before his own, sometimes at terrible cost.” In another, she’s with Dina (Isabela Merced) as they ride on horseback. Other characters shown includeRutina Wesley’s Maria andGabriel Luna’s Tommy. No images show Joel and Bella in the same scene, a testament to the strained relationship.
Abby’s arrival is monumentalas it will impact Joel and Bella’s lives.The Last of Us' co-showrunnerCraig Mazinrevealed thatDever initially auditioned for Bellain early casting calls, but they kept her in reserve for Season 2. “The reason we cast Kaitlyn is because she’s an incredible actor. You look at her body of work and the way she throws herself at that stuff… We value performance over anything else,” he told Entertainment Weekly. Other cast members revealed to appear in Season 2includeJeffrey WrightandCatherine O’Hara.
