While it would seem like the easy money for this weekend would be on aDwayne Johnsonaction movie,Skyscraperwas no match for the animated family filmHotel Transylvania 3. The comedy sequel pulled in a solid $16.7 million at the Friday box office alone as it heads to a projected weekend total of $42 million. This is the firstHotel Transylvaniamovie to launch in the summer frame (the previous two debuted in September), but its take is in line with the previous movies....

As silly as it may sound,Ryan Gosling’s performance as “just Ken” inGreta Gerwig’s smash hit,Barbie, is genuinely Oscar-worthy. In fact, Gosling’s performance as Ken is actually so good that it could almost be considered a flaw in the rest of the film. Ken spends pretty much the entire second half of the film as the main antagonist, and while he represents the serious issue of toxic masculinity, Gosling is just so gosh darn entertaining that we can’t help but love him while also hating what he comes to stand for....

New Line Cinema is, so far, doing everything right with their adaptation ofStephen King’sIT. The horror-drama directed byAndres Muschiettiis poised to be a big box office performer when it opens in just over a month. Now, thanks to the reveal of the film’s run-time, audiences know just how long they’ll have to attempt to stay in their seats without running out of the theater in terror. According to theBritish Board of Film Classification,ITwill clock in at 135 minutes, or two hours and fifteen minutes for the chronologically challenged....

With Academy Award-nominated directorStephen Daldry’sTogetheropening in select theaters this weekend, I recently spoke toJames McAvoyandSharon Horganabout making the dramedy. If you haven’t seen the trailer, the film takes place in London and follows two romantic partners that are forced to rethink their relationship when they’re quarantined together in lockdown along with their 10-year-old son (Samuel Logan). The fantastic script was written by Tony-, Emmy- and Olivier Award-winnerDennis Kellyand brilliantly captures what so many of us are feeling about the current state of the world....

One of my favorite films of 2018 is directorYorgos Lanthimos’The Favourite. Loaded with amazing cinematography byRobbie Ryan, brilliant performances by the entire cast, a fantastic script byDeborah DavisandTony McNamara, amazing costumes and production design, and remarkable work from every other department,The Favouriteis one of those special movies that you absolutely need to see on the biggest screen possible. Also, while Lanthimos had previously shown he was a gifted filmmaker with his previous work (TheKilling of a Scared Deer,The Lobster, andDogtooth)The Favouriteonly reinforces my belief that his talent behind the camera is still growing....

Rick and Mortyco-creatorJustin Roilandhas officially been cleared of the domestic violence charges levied against him earlier this year. Roiland had been facing one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit after an incident involving a Jane Doe he was dating back in 2020. The Toronto International Film Festival traditionally serves as a significant launching pad for eventual Oscar winners. It played host to screenings of films like12 Years a Slave,The Shape of Water, andMoonlightin the past, and the buzz from those screenings carried over into the Oscar race in a big way. So it’s with a not-insignificant degree of certainty that I can sayNoah Baumbach’s major, devastating divorce dramaMarriage Story—which played like gangbusters at TIFF this year—is a serious Oscar contender in all major categories....

Christopher McQuarrieis giving fans a new (albeit minuscule) glance into the world ofMission: Impossible 7. In a newInstagram post, the veteranMission: Impossibledirector and writer posted a photo of actressRebecca Ferguson— who has played former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust in the franchise’s last two films — in costume during the filming of the delayed seventh installment. While the photo is an extreme close-up (and in extremely desaturated black and white), we can see that Ferguson is sporting an eyepatch as part of her costume, pulled up to her forehead (assumingly between takes)....
