It’s interesting to remember thatJoeandAnthony Russo, the fraternal diptych behind the wildly entertainingCaptain America: Civil WarandCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, didn’t have a whole lot of experience when they scored the Winter Soldier gig. Sure,Welcome to Collinwoodwas a passable heist comedy and their work onCommunityandArrested Developmenthas been celebrated widely, but that kind of employment history would put them more in line to remakeFletchorGhostbustersthan take on arguably the mightiest of all modern franchises. And yet, they’ve shown impressive and occasionally dazzling production chops in bothCaptain Americafilms, and are now bonafide hit-makers, even if the films themselves are lacking in overall personality.
And yet, the Russo brothers have shown impressive and occasionally very smart production chops in bothCaptain Americafilms, and are now bonafide hit-makers, even if the films themselves are lacking in overall personality. So, it’s natural that the brothers are now signing up as producers on another comics property with an eye to returning to the television format. According toDeadline, the Russos will produce a TV adaptation of Image Comics’Deadly Class, a 1980s-set whatsit centered on the violent happenings that occur at a high school, with the comics writer and co-creatorRick Remenderon board as writer and fellow producer. The project exists under the Sony TV banner, and will start being shopped around to networks and streaming services in the coming months.

The show will be overseen byBansheeshowrunnerAdam Targum, who will be working from scripts by Remender and Miles Feld, with Targum and Russos colleagueMike Larrocaset as executive producers. Considering the dark tone of the series, Deadly Class could make for an excellent addition to channels like FX, AMC, or even Cinemax, which has been steadily increasing their profile since the inception ofBansheeandThe Knick. I’m sure Remenden, Feld, and Targum are busy at work on the project but, for now, the Russos have bigger fish to fry, namely the proverbial the two-ton tuna that isAvengers: Infinity War.
