Hot Topichas unveiled a fun twist on the beloved Sanrio character, Kuromi, with a new exclusive Funko Pop. Their latest release features Kuromi cosplaying as her sidekick, Baku. The Vinyl Figuredons a costume complete with the dream-sniffer’s floppy earsand hollow white eyes. Despite the fun makeover, though, Kuromi’s signaturepunk-rock aestheticstill makes an appearance, and her iconic jester’s hat with a pink skull peeks through the costume.
The cutest detail is that the figureholds a miniature Baku in her hands,which makes thisFunko Popa great addition to any Sanrio collection. The listing describes the collectible as “flocked,” which means that it has aplush-like finish instead of the usual plastic. The Kuromi figure stands at approximately 3-and-a-half inches tall, and is officially imported by Funko. The collectible features the Pop! 111 stamp, which means it’s the 111th variant in the Sanrio Funko Pop lineup. Longtime fans of Sanrio will know thatKuromi debuted in 2005 as My Melody’s self-proclaimed rival.However, thetrailerfor the upcoming series teases that the twocharacters will experience a lot of growthwhen faced with a crisis. As perNetflix, the story kicks off with My Melody opening a cake shop when, all of a sudden, she starts experiencing strange things. Kuromi, who is on the hunt to discover the secret behind My Melody’s delicious cakes, soon gets caught up in the drama.
The stop-motion series is directed byTomoki Misato, who expressed his excitement for the project toNetflix. “This momentous project motivated all of us to come together, take on various challenges, and push the envelope with stop-motion.” Misato hopes that the viewers enjoy the thrilling story and all thecute charactersthat it features. ScreenwriterShuko Nemotoadded that writing lines for My Melody and Kuromi felt like a “reward” for her. Since the project was developed during theCOVID-19 pandemic, she couldn’t meet with Misato. However, they remained connected remotely and worked together to bring the dream to life. “The project is filled with love for the worldof My Melody, beloved by people of all ages,” Nemoto said.
