“Into every generation a slayer is born.” A certain fandom will forever recognize those words. And, for a long time, we thought the story of the slayer ended whenBuffy the Vampire Slayercame to an explosive conclusion in 2003. But now, more than 20 years later, it seems that the slayer will be born yet again, with Hulu bringing the series back in the form of a reboot. WithSarah Michelle Gellarset to reprise her role as the titular demon hunter, audiences are stoked about what the project will shape up to be and where we’ll catch up with Buffy after all these years. Recently chatting withDeadline, Disney TV Studios chief,Eric Schrier, opened up about how the off-shoot came to be and just how long its star has been involved.

As it would turn out, theBuffyreboot started on the creative side, with Schrier revealing,

“It stemmed out of Karey Burke and [Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment Scripted President] Simran Sethi had always wanted to attempt to figure out a way to reboot that show. Our partners at Fox Searchlight Television, who I work with as well, have a deal withChloé Zhao. It ends up that Chloé Zhao lovesBuffy, so we put them together. And out of that came the idea.”

As those following the reboot will likely already know, Zhao (who previously lended her vision to such feature-length titles asEternalsand the Academy Award-sweepingNomadland) will be taking the reins as the helmer behind theBuffyreboot pilot. Meanwhile, although she didn’t make her appearance immediately known, it turns out that Gellar was always involved with the revival, with Schrier revealing, “Sarah Michelle Gellar has been a part of it from the get-go as well; she is an executive producer.”

Along with Zhao and Gellar, the production is calling in forces both new and old to help develop what’s certain to be a successful reboot.

“[Executive producer]Gail Bermanis back; she’s been behind the scenes trying to pull it all together. We haveNoraandLilla Zuckermanwriting it, whom we have a deal with; they’re great.”

At the end of the day, the show will be something that’s specifically for the fans, which is a sentiment thatGellar has repeated time and time again. Touching on the importance of bringing the title back for a reason and not just because they can, Shrier said,

“So that’s just an amazing package that came about organically because we were excited about retelling that story after so much time in a new way. I think all of these reboots come from that idea of, ‘What’s the new way in which we can tell these stories?’ Not ‘Okay, they’re IP and let’s go reboot them.’”
