One of the most surprising relationships thatYellowjacketsunveiled inSeason 3was the sudden connection between Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) and Melissa (Jenna Burgess) in the wilderness. While fans tend to root for some couples on the show, like the beautifully tragic relationship between Tai (Tawny NewsomeandJasmin Savoy Brown) and Van (Lauren AmbroseandLiv Hewson), Shauna and Melissa’s situationship felt a little off from the start — and things only got worse when adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) and adult Melissa (Hilary Swank) crossed paths again after many years away from each other. During a recent episode ofColliderLadies Night, Nélisse addressed the romance and weighed in on Shauna’s point of view.
During the interview, Nélisse toldLadies NighthostPerri Nemiroffthat there is a lot of nuance to Shauna’s feelings. At the same time, she underscored that the context in whichthis relationship came to lifewas always going to determine how it played out, noting that they might have thrived in another circumstance. When asked if she thinks Shauna and Melissa ever loved each other, after Nemiroff noted that present-day Melissa claims she never did, Nélisse said:
“Love is a very strong word. I think she saw a lot of herself in Melissa, and I think that relationship could have flourished had there been different circumstances. I think Shauna’s at a place where she doesn’t love herself, so how can you love someone else if you can’t even find it within yourself? So, I do think that she feels a strong connection, and there is something very honest about their relationship, but I just think the circumstances are so flawed that there is no way that this was going to end up in something good.”
Shauna and Melissa’s Relationship Took a Turn For the Worst in ‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3
Shauna and Melissa’s relationship turns sour before they even leave the wilderness, so when they meet again in thepresent-day timeline,their relationship is filled with bad blood for multiple reasons, including Melissa faking her own death. We witness Shaunabeing extremely violent with Melissa, and while it’s a shock, the series quickly makes it clear thatMelissa can be even worse than Shaunaif she wants to be. Will this relationship become something even more dangerous and destructive? We will have to wait for Season 4 to find out.
Yellowjacketshas yet to secure a Season 4 renewal. Back when Swank wasannounced as a guest star for Season 3, it was also revealed that she could possiblybecome a regular cast memberif the show was renewed. If that happens, fans can be sure that we haven’t seen the last ofShauna and Melissa’s relationshipin the series.
