Projected to exceed box office forecasts in its debut weekend, directorRyan Coogler’sSinnersdelivered one of the best Thursday preview hauls for an original horror film.Sinnersis Coogler’s first non-IP film since his debut feature,Fruitvale Station, which opened over a decade ago and launched the career of starMichael B. Jordan. Coogler has worked with Jordan on every subsequent project, and reunited with him onSinners, in which the star plays a dual role. The movie opened to excellent reviews, and is expected to continue the positive momentum for Warner Bros. thatA Minecraft Moviestarted a couple of weeks ago.

Sinnersearned $4.7 million on Thursday, from around 3,000 locations. Preview screenings began at 3 in the afternoon. This isthe second-biggest Thursday haul ever for an original horror film, behind the $6.7 million that directorJordan Peele’sNopedebuted with in 2022.Nopemade around $44 million in its opening weekend, before concluding its domestic run with a little over $120 million.Sinnersis currentlyeying a $45 million opening weekend haulas well, with the higher end of projections sitting at around $50 million. In addition to its excellent reviews, the movie could also benefit from the Easter holiday frame.

Sinnersdebuted with a perfect 100% approval rating on the aggregator websiteRotten Tomatoes, after W.B. lifted the embargo on reviews weeks before the film’s release. The rating has now dropped to a still-excellent 97%. In a few hours, we’ll have a CinemaScore grade to refer to as well. Horror movies tend to earn poor grades on the polling platform, but some titles, such asA Quiet Place: Part II, have been known to defy trends. That movie earned a similar $4.8 million in Thursday previews, before grossing $48 million in its three-day debut.Movies with higher grades tend to have longer legs at the box office.

‘Sinners’ Is Being Given a Major IMAX Release

Produced ona reported budget of around $90 million,Sinnersis Coogler’s first film since 2023’sBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever, which earned mostly positive reviews. But it couldn’t attain the same level of success as his firstBlack Pantherfilm, either critically or commercially. OnSinners, Coogler has reunited withWakanda ForevercinematographerAutumn Durald Arkapaw, who partially shot the movie on IMAX.Sinnersis being presented in IMAX 70mm at a handful of locations, putting Coogler in the same league asChristopher NolanandDenis Villeneuve.
