For a long time,Crunchyrollhas been a dominant force in the anime streaming scene. In an era where every broadcaster and media outlet has fought for a share of the streaming market, Crunchyroll has found a niche audience and catered to it for many years. However, despite having an extensive library of anime content, it was recently reported that anime fans have discovered a new platform for consuming their content.
According to a new study byDentsu, it revealed that 48% of viewers globally go toNetflixto watch anime. This statistic makes sense since not every region can access Crunchyroll, like some parts of Asia, so they would rely on Netflix to watch titles likeSpy x Family. And those that do, not everything will be available in that region’s library. However, when focusing on the U.S. market, Crunchyroll ranks last at 23%. Dominating this region are Netflix, at 63%, followed by Disney+ and Hulu, at 46%, and then Prime Video, at 43%. As of writing, neither companies have commented on this study.

Crunchyroll first launched in 2006 and is now owned by Sony. DuringSony’s Business Segment Presentation & Fireside Chat 2025, the company bragged about how it’s able to take advantage of its diverse businesses (eg, Crunchyroll, Sony Music, etc) to produce content and products and maximize its IP globally and that this synergy is part of their business strategy, especially when it comes to producing anime content, usingSolo Leveling’s success as an example.
