Every filmmaker has their dream project. ForStanley Kubrick, it wasthat Napoleon moviethat never came together. For someone likeThe Neon DemondirectorNicolas Winding Refn, it’s a big blockbuster with tons of action (andmaybe Batgirl). But what about the two names behind something as bizarre asSwiss Army Man, dubbed “theDaniel Radcliffefarting corpse movie”? The answer is just as bizarre as you might imagine.
During an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, co-directorsDaniel ScheinertandDaniel Kwanwere asked about their dream project. Scheinert first offered a vague answer: “Every project we make is us trying to reach some sort of weird and silly cosmic dream.” But then Kwan asked, “What about yourWhite Chicksdream?” and the answer is pretty spectacular, even for haters of the film:
Oh! One of my dreams is to makeWhite Chicksas a hard-R, Oscar-worthy drama, starring the original cast. It would be about gender and race relations in the 21st century, starring theWayans Brothers. I don’t know if you have seenWhite Chickslately, but it has a lot of meat to it and explores everything, like class, gender, race, the handicapped, age.
Kwan added, “But it explores it in the worst way possible.”
In case you’ve completely blocked that movie out of your head, here’s a little refresher:White Chickswas released in 2004, and starredMarlonandShawn Wayans, who also worked on the screenplay. The brothers play disgraced FBI agents that go undercover as two Caucasian women in an attempt to foil a kidnapping plot against two hotel heiresses.
It’s a film that was dragged through the coals by critics with a 15 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, but that didn’t stop people from seeing it.White Chicksgrossed more than $113 million worldwide. (It’s production budget was approximately $37 million.)
If Marlon is to be believed, people are pining for a sequel. “That’s the one movie I would love — we all collectively would love — to do a sequel for, and that’s the one movie, whenever I’m on social media…whenWhite Chicksis on, it’s trending,” hetoldLarry Kinglast year. “They want to see aWhite Chickssequel.”
Maybe Scheinert will get his chance. Never say never when it comes to Hollywood. I never thought we’d reach a day when an emoji movie was in the works, either, but that’s the world we live in.
