Now, when you heard the greatWerner Herzogwas playing a role in Lucasfilm’s upcoming Disney+ seriesThe Mandalorian, you probably had a pretty good idea of what you were in for – probably not the heroic lead. The celebrated filmmaker and king of gold medal interview quotes has leaned into fun acting roles in recent years, including a villainous turn inJack Reacherand a delightfully insane moment as Keg Jeggings onParks and Rec. And as you might have expected, his role in the Bounty Hunter-based series will be yet another small, villain-tinged appearance.

While speaking withIndieWireabout his new documentaryMeeting Gorbachev, the filmmaker teased a minor, villainous role inThe Mandalorian – so yeah, probably just about what you were expecting.

Speaking about his late-career turn towards acting, Herzog said:

“Yes, I did some more now. Now this is not a secret anymore, a small part, real small part, in “The Mandalorian,” the Star Wars sequel or whatever you call it. I like to do it because I know I’m good on screen, but only if I have to play a real villain.”

As wepreviously reported, episodes of the series will be directed byDave Filoni,Bryce Dallas Howard,Deborah Chow,Rick Famuyiwa, andTaika Waititi. Waititi fans are especially in for a treat as theThor: Ragnarokfilmmaker will once again do double duty; both directing and apparently performing the voice of bounty hunter droid IG-88.The Mandalorianalso starsPedro Pascal,Giancarlo Esposito,Emily Swallow,Carl Weathers,Omid Abtahi,Werner Herzog, andNick Nolte. Disney hasn’t set the launch date for Disney+ yet, soThe Mandalorian’s release date is still tbd.
