20th Century Fox’sX-Menfranchise may be in the process of being “reconfigured”, but the studio is wasting no time moving on to the next chapter. A new report has revealed that the nextX-Menfilm will begin filming next May in Montreal, and directorJosh Boone(The Fault in Our Stars) dropped a pretty clear hint that that movie is going to beNew Mutants.
A report inLe Journal de Montrealrevealed that the production office for the nextX-Menoffice is already set at MELS Studios with set construction beginning in January.Michel Trudel, the president of MELS confirmed,“They will start shooting in May and they will occupy Studios 2 and 3 of MELS for several months.” While the report didn’t explicitly state whichX-Menfilm will film next year, Boone retweeted Den of Geek’s coverage of the story with the note “Hmmmm, what movie could it be?” So yeah, it’s probablyNew Mutants.

And that makes sense. Fox finds themselves at a bit of a crossroads with their long-running mutant verse. It’s a cash cow, earning them more than $4 billion, worldwide, but this year’s release,Bryan Singer‘sX-Men:Apocalypse,was met with critically and commercially disappointing results, earning only $544 million worldwide toDays of Future Pasts‘ $748. On top of that,X-MenstarsJennifer Lawrence,James McAvoy,Michael FassbenderandNicholas Houlthave reached the end of their three-picture contracts, and if the studio wants them to re-up, it’s going to be costly, and the long-plannedGambitmovie has yet to come together again after losing two directors.
Meanwhile, Boone has been hard at work onNew Mutantsalongside hisThe Fault in Our Starsscreenwriting duoScott NeustadterandMichael H. Weber. The film adaptation will reportedly have a YA tone and feature the mutants Wolfsbane, Magik, Sunspot, Danielle Moonstar, Mirage, and Cannonball. They’ll also bejoined by Professor Xand,if early reports are to be believed,Alexandra Shipp‘s young Storm, who was introduced inX-Men: Apocalypse.

New Mutantsdoesn’t have a confirmed release date, but after a recentrelease date shakeup, the next “Untitled Marvel/Fox Film” is scheduled for July 15, 2025.
