Production on the nextThormovie will be underway within a month. Marvel Studios has been developingThor: Ragnarokfor some time now, but after settingWhat We Do in the ShadowsandHunt for the WilderpeopledirectorTaika Waititito helm last year, things have been heating up. The picture scored a formidable villain inCate Blanchettas Hela, and it looks as though it’s going to be a very Australia-focused feature—at least in spirit—as filming is poised to begin down under on July 4th.
PerThe Advertiser(viaGeekNation),Thor: Ragnarokfilming will begin on July 4th at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast and will continue through October, setting up what looks to be a lengthy and highly involved shoot for the anticipated sequel. While theThorfilms have thus far been a bit of a red-headed stepchild in the MCU, with neitherThornorThor: The Dark Worldmaking much of a lasting impression on audiences, Marvel seems keen on mixing things up considerably forRagnarok.

For one, the film isa buddy movie of sorts, as it will seeChris Hemsworth’s Thor teaming up withMark Ruffalo’s Hulk on an intergalactic road trip. Additionally, the subtitle hints at some seriously dark stuff going down, and asRagnarokis poised to lead directly intoAvengers: Infinity War, it’s not hard to imagine this sequel concluding in a very dark way.
Hemsworth is reprising his role as the God of Thunder alongsideTom Hiddlestonas Loki,Idris Elbaas Heimdall, andAnthony Hopkinsas Odin (who may or may not be dead as a doornail), but Waititi and Marvel have put togetheran incredible supporting cast of newcomersthat includesCreedactressTessa Thompsonas Valkyrie,Karl Urbanas baddie Skurge, andJeff Goldblumas The Grandmaster, anelder of the universeand likely a central figure in the Infinity War to come.

Waititi has proven a handle on character and pacing, andWilderpeoplealso shows he knows his way around a set piece, so it’ll be interesting to see what the New Zealand-born filmmaker brings to the MCU withRagnarok. Luckily the release date of June 20, 2025 is ever-approaching, with this formidable cast assembling next month to finally putRagnarokin front of cameras.
Also filming this summer is Marvel and Sony’sSpider-Man: Homecoming, but it also sounds like Hemsworth and Co. may have a busy Marvel docket ahead of them, as the two-part epicAvengers: Infinity Warstarts production in DecemberwithCaptain America: Civil WardirectorsJoeandAnthony Russo. They’re shooting bothAvengerssequels at the same time to accommodate the busy schedules of the bevy of Marvel Cinematic Universe actors, and we don’t have confirmation if Hemsworth or any otherThoractors are in both or just one of the films, so it’s possible Hemsworth isn’t even due on set until months later. Nevertheless, Marvel Studios is about to embark on its most ambitious production schedule yet, which also includesBlack PantherandAnt-Man and the Waspfilming in 2017.
