Thunderbolts*fever is still running high, and now we have the U.S. Agent himself,Wyatt Russell, taking onBrokeas True Brandywine, where he’ll be clinging to his fading rodeo career. The first trailer of the contemporary western is now out, andthe film is all set for a digital release on June 29, 2025.
Russell’s first appearance in the trailer shows him nearly frostbitten in the snow — a visual strongly reminiscent ofLeonardo DiCaprioinThe Revenant. The scene then cuts back to himas a bareback bronc rider, grinding it outin his hometown. The movie is helmed and written byCarlyle Eubank(Muzzle) and the cast ensemble includes but isn’t limited toAuden Thornton, Mary McDonnell with Tom SkerrittandDennis Quaid, in addition to Russell. While most of the details of the plot are kept under wraps, here’s what the synopsis of the film says:

“Broke is a contemporary western following the story of True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), a bareback bronc rider clinging to his fading rodeo career. When True gets trapped in a freak spring blizzard, he must battle injuries, illness, and the bitter cold. While fighting for his survival, True is forced to face his choices and the circumstances that led him to his tenuous situation. Co-starring Dennis Quaid, Mary McDonnell and Tom Skerritt.”
Audiences Can Expect a Darker Side of Rodeo in ‘Broke’
In an interview withPEOPLEpublished on June 20, 2025, Wyatt Russell opened up about his latest role in Broke, and called the film“a true labor of love,”and an opportunity to showcaserodeo culturein its most authentic form. The former ice hockey player went on to express his sentiments and what we can expect from the film in the following words:
“We’re so used to seeing the bright side of rodeo and the bravado of the façade. But we never get to see the darker side of what it can be as well. Sometimes you can hang on a little too long, and like any aspect of life, it’s no different in a bronc rider’s life.”

In the movie, Quaid’s character tells True, “Being a man means making tough decisions,” a line that underscores the film’s emotional core. Therefore, based on the trailer and Russell’s own reflections,Brokeappears to be the story of a man worn down by the weight of unrealized dreams— someone struggling to reconcile who he is with who he thought he’d become.
Brokeis all set torelease next month on August 04, 2025 on home entertainment. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates!
